About this deal

It’s good to see the fully automatic Vacation Mode. Turn this on, and your smart lights will turn on and off automatically, simulating the presence of someone at home. No, despite both being owned by Signify, Philips Hue and Philips Wiz cannot be used together. This is because Philips Wiz is a budget Wi-Fi-based smart lighting system whereas Philips Hue is a premium Zigbee-based system. Do LIFX Bulbs Work With Hue? Create a cosy atmosphere with warm white light. A smart light that simply adapts to your daily activities No, LIFX bulbs do not work with Hue because they are Wi-Fi bulbs whereas Hue is a Zigbee-based system. However, both brands work with Alexa, Google Home, and HomeKit which you can use to include both LIFX and Hue bulbs in your smart home. Does Nanoleaf Work With Hue? This project hasn't been entirely smooth sailing; the Home app and the bulbs sometimes need a minute to see each other if you turn the bulbs on and off with a light switch, and one unfortunate power outage totally disrupted communication between the bulbs and my Raspberry Pi. I might have been able to troubleshoot it with enough time, but my setup is simple enough that I just reset everything and did it all over again. But that's a risk you run with any smart home DIY project, and my house needs enough bulbs in each room that it's worth dealing with some headaches in exchange for a much lower cost per bulb.

Yes, IKEA Tradfri smart bulbs are compatible with Hue. You can connect them to your Hue bridge as with official Hue lights and add them to your routines or control them with your voice. However, there are limitations as you can’t use them with HomeKit via Hue or Hue Entertainment. Do Sengled Bulbs Work With Hue? If you have a WiZmote, you can pair this with a single room. Via the app, you can choose which sense the four shortcut buttons will trigger, plus the fade-in and fade-out times for the on/off buttons. The latter sets how long it takes lights to turn on or off, although I’m not particularly convinced how useful being able to adjust this setting really is. As the WiZ bulbs use Wi-Fi to connect, they can be a bit slow to register in the app if they’ve been turned off at the light switch: I found that they could take up to 30 seconds to appear, which is quite a lot slower than Hue bulbs take, with Zigbee being much faster and more reliable. While Hue doesn’t provide much in the way of dynamic scenes, WiZ does. With the likes of Fireplace or Ocean, your lights can shift colours gently creating a more intensive mood than a solid colour alone provides. The special bedtime and wake up scenes run over a 30 minute period, dimming or brightening the lights automatically.WiZ also has a series of filament bulbs, available in the tuneable white series. They go from cold white to warm white, as well as dimming, which is an improvement over the Hue version, which dims only and has a set colour temperature. AduroSmart ERIA – This Dutch company offers some great lights that are a real contender to Philips Hue in terms of colour

As WiZ uses Wi-Fi, the number of bulbs you can connect depends on your router. Typically, routers support up to 254 devices in total, but that includes your computers, TVs and so on. Realistically, you’re unlikely to hit the limit of your router, unless you want a massive installation of WiZ bulbs. There are no specific outdoor products for WiZ, so if you want to light up your garden, you’ll either have to install bulbs in outdoor fittings (and hope your Wi-Fi is good enough to work outside) or go with Hue instead. Switches and sensors The remote is a useful tool to have, say leaving it sat on a table, giving you control without having to reach for your phone. It’s a little basic (it looks like the kind of cheap remote you get with a budget speaker), but gives you on/off control, dimming, plus shortcuts to turn on the night light mode and your choice of four scenes. Features Bulbs are available in three types: dimmable, tunable white (typically a warm 2700K to cold 6500K light) and full colour (does everything the other bulbs do plus you get the full range of millions of colours to choose from. Overall, I put the Smart+ bulbs in last position because they can struggle with animations and the colour temperature only goes to 2700k whereas most others go to around 2000k.

The number of times you turn it on and off will vary by manufacturer, for example, IKEA requires 6 toggles on/off whereas Innr only requires 2. Some do not need this step. While the main benefit of smart lightning might be controlling it from an app or using your voice, there are times when it’s just easier to use a dedicated switch. The huge range of wireless switches for Hue, from the Hue Wall Switch Module to the Senic Friends of Hue Smart Switch, is what makes that system stand out. Most of the competition doesn’t provide remotes, but WiZ has a limited selection. Cree – Cree Zigbee bulbs work with Hue, Smart Things, Wink and more. However, no vendors are selling them in the UK right now. Colour reproduction is similar, too, although I found that the Hue bulb was capable of putting out a much stronger red than the WiZ bulb. That generally means that any colours that use a shade of red are that bit bolder with Hue.

Using a low-power RF protocol to communicate directly with a bulb, there’s a choice of the Motion Sensor to turn your lights on or off automatically, and the WiZmote remote control. You need to ensure the bulbs have the latest firmware before connecting as older versions have had many problems. They are not the best Hue-compatible bulbs on the market, see Innr, Lidl, IKEA, and Linkind for alternative products. Do Hive Bulbs Work With Hue? Mix different colour and white lights modes to create the perfect light ambience for your daily moment. Save it and call it out at any time with app, WiZmote or voice. Adding your third party bulbs to Hue is generally an easy process, but often requires one extra step that can vary by manufacturer.

I then used the Wiz app to get all of the Wiz bulbs joined to my network, which is pretty much all you need it for if you intend to use the bulbs with Homebridge. There's nothing stopping you from using HomeKit and the Wiz app separately, and the Wiz app has some neat color presets you can't really replicate with the Home app, but I mainly control the bulbs using Siri voice commands and HomeKit automations. So far, this guide has focused on hue-compatible bulbs in the UK. However, there are many more manufacturers that offer support, mostly sold in continental Europe and the USA. I thought it was worthwhile to give them a mention here for any international readers: The WiZ app keeps records of the energy consumption of your lights. View your weekly or daily report and plan your lighting wisely for optimised energy consumption at home.
