The train ride from Ella to Ohiya and Ambewela takes about two to three hours, and from Ohiya and Ambewela you can take a tuk-tuk or taxi to Horton Plains. The entire train trip takes 7 hours, including stops at the villages and towns between Polonnaruwa and Colombo.
