Homer's fawning over the pig makes Bart, now fed up with his father's carelessness, look to their neighbor, Ned Flanders, as a father figure.

It is the 30th highest grossing animated film of all time and the 2nd highest grossing traditionally animated film. His stomach now full to the brim, the last missile stops right at Scratchy's stomach; it then takes a boot out of the tip and kicks him, who then explodes. Within seconds, all their friends and everyone they know in Springfield (except for Ned Flanders and his kids/including Abe/Colin initially offers flowers for Lisa, but they end up being burnt by Carl) have formed a massive angry mob approaching the Simpson home intending to kill Homer and getting contained in the dome. The plot finishes with the Springfieldians fixing the town, restoring things back to normal and getting the Simpsons' house re-built with the help of the aforementioned family out of gratitude. The script was rewritten over a hundred times, also continuing after work on the animation began in 2006.

Later that day, Homer does some chores, including the removal of a hornet's nest (which he places inside the Flanders' mailbox) and the fixing of a sinkhole in the backyard (which he covers with a sandbox, and then using Maggie as a makeshift plug when that didn't work). Another dropped scene featured Moe describing Springfield's varying physical states inside the dome, one of which was the Disneyland ride Autopia. As Cargill is presumed to be arrested and convicted for his actions, the town praises and forgives Homer, who rides off with Marge and Maggie on the motorbike into the autumn sunset and Homer and Marge kiss each other as they happily reunite.

While Marge cleans up the piggy footprints while Lisa tells her about Colin, Marge notices the pig tracks on the ceiling; Homer has been walking the family's pet pig on the ceiling while singing " Spider-Pig" (a parody of the 1967 Spider-Man theme). Century Fox erected a giant pink donut in the town of Springfield in Canterbury, New Zealand, to celebrate being named Springfield, [71] [72] while in London a double decker bus-sized floating inflatable Spider Pig was set up next to Battersea Power Station.For inspiration for the crowd scenes in the film, the production staff referenced a poster featuring more than 320 Simpsons characters. When they pull his body apart, Homer realizes that he cannot survive without others, and must save Springfield and his family. A lot of the animation was produced using Wacom Cintiq tablets, which allowed images to be drawn directly onto a computer monitor to facilitate production. Kodos was also in one version of the movie; he and Kang slated the film over the end credits; however, this was cut after a test screening. When comparing the film to the early episodes of the show, Stephen Rowley concluded that the film "has more going for it than the show in its later years, but is still a long way short of what made it so invigorating".

The family escapes through a sinkhole, which destroys their house afterwards, and flees to Alaska, where they try to restart their lives. Religion is focused on in Grampa's momentary possession, and Marge believing what he said to be a message from God. It set several American box office records, including highest grossing opening weekend for a non-CG animated film and for a film based on a television series, surpassing Mission: Impossible 2.Groening read about a town that had to get rid of pig feces in their water supply, which inspired the plot of the film. Homer realizes that his family is inside and tries to rescue them by knocking the truck over with a wrecking ball. Julie Kavner (pictured in 1974) was praised for her emotional performance as Marge and was nominated for an Annie Award for voice acting.

At the church service the next day, there is a brief tribute to the passing of Green Day, the most recent band to die in Springfield. Back on Earth, Itchy becomes a hero through lying about Scratchy, and eventually becomes the President. Mayor Quimby proves the effectiveness of said "idiot-proof" barriers by getting Cletus to try dumping a dead possum in the lake only to walk into the concrete barricades, when he could have just thrown the dead possum over the barrier. Some time later, Bart shoots at Homer with a BB gun while he carries a load of bricks; Homer dares Bart to skateboard to Krusty Burger and back naked. Cargill's scene with Bart and Homer at the film's conclusion was added in to fully resolve his story, and the " Spider-Pig" gag was also a late addition.The camera then zooms past Moe's Tavern into the Kwik-E-Mart where Apu is secretly changing the expiration date on one of his products from 2006 to 2008.
