I can remember three, two involving one person and one involving three or four people, who we chased out. Stan found that Field Training Officers, the men and women who show new officers the ropes, have an outsized influence on establishing the culture of a law enforcement agency.

In 1979, shortly after drummer Hutchinson left the band to be replaced by John Bradbury, Dammers formed the 2 Tone Records label and released the band's debut single " Gangsters", a reworking of Prince Buster's " Al Capone". The songs take their inspiration from ska, dub reggae and Lover’s Rock (The Specials, Lee Perry), 80's new wave (Depeche Mode, Human League, Fun Boy Three) and indie rock (Lana Del Ray, the xx). Stan says, “Because once you fly the flag of your particular tribe, that becomes the focus of your mission. The thing was, none of them were making music that sounded remotely like the contents of In the Studio.I said if he overdubbed a ska rhythm we could put it on the B-side of Gangsters, the first Specials single.

According to Dammers, anti-racism was intrinsic to the formation of the Specials, in that the band was formed with the goal of integrating black and white people. They declined to promote an album Dammers had allegedly spent a fortune recording, presumably in the belief that no amount of advertising could convince people to listen to something so austere and folorn, a belief perhaps bolstered by the icy commercial reception afforded to two further singles, War Crimes and Racist Friend. Stan acknowledges that it’s not fair or reasonable to put the onus on the victims of police brutality, especially in cases where police abuse their power and violate someone’s civil rights, but Stan wants people to be able to defuse and survive an encounter so they can live to hold bad-actors accountable in the proper venue.
