About this deal

Rabbit Hole is the latest enthralling standalone from the master that is king of crime Mark Billingham. Mark is also the author of the standalone novels In The Dark, Rush Of Blood, Die Of Shameand his latest, Rabbit Hole. King uses the phrase keeping it on the down-low in a way that suggests he probably doesn’t understand how this phrase is currently used—and has been used for quite a while. The novel expertly delves into daily life in a psych ward where drugs and routine rule over treatment, and Rabbit Hole’s stunning finale puts a new spin on Al and the plot.

I’ve long been an admirer of Mark Billingham’s work and, with this highly original novel, he’s added yet another string to his bow. Sleepyhead and Scaredy Cat were made into a hit TV series on Sky 1 starring David Morrissey as Thorne, and a series based on the novels In the Dark and Time of Death was broadcast on BBC1.Her state of mind is always in a constant state of dismay, so everything she says or does has to be taken with a grain of salt.

Billingham plays the unreliable narrator card brilliantly here, as we never really know the truth about what’s going on, leading to an electrifying conclusion. And she was the central character in If It Bleeds, a novella in the 2020 collection of the same name.

Brooks is a pro at building suspense even if it plays out in some rather spectacularly yucky episodes, one involving a short spear that takes its name from “the sucking sound of pulling it out of the dead man’s heart and lungs.

First of all, it doesn't really work that way (it's an internal compulsion, not something that's triggered by other people's weight problems), and secondly, it's not funny. I have to applaud Billingham's description of those residents and their illnesses, as well as the setting and the every day life on the ward. Billingham offers up a rich and intricate portrayal of a first-person narrator who appears to be unreliable and gives us insight into her issues mentally.
