About this deal

They’ve been friends since they were boys but haven’t seen each other for years, and now Maurie is dying. This extraordinary work by Peter May explores how aspirations and expectations shape us, and the pivotal yet changeable role that friendships play in our lives. The uncle put us on a train to Glasgow where we were met by our respective fathers at Central Station.

Ali So in Runaway, you tell the tale of the three old friends re-visiting the past and seeing the significance of what they discover and how it relates to their present and future. But where May exquisitely links past and present in the Lewis books, Runaway is clunky, cliche ridden and forced.I now live in the flats above The Derby Cafe and my back window looks down towards the sheltered housing where Jack stays in the book. The trip undertaken by the older version of the men in the present day is filled with a mixture of nostalgia and humour. How could I have known then that failure of ambition is like a long, lingering death, and that disappointment with your life never goes away? The trip is a replica of the 1965 trip but this time seen through the eyes of older and wiser heads.

REVIEW: ‘Runaway’ by Peter May | Buried Under Books

This is a semi-autobiographical novel featuring some of Peter May's own escapades in London back in the sixties, and it certainly reads like an autobiography, although hopefully the crime committed is fantasy. In 2015, the three lads, now in their late sixties, are brought together again by the report of a murder in London. We spent a week sleeping in the van in parks and backstreets, trying during the day to get an agency to take us on. The shifts between 1960s London and 2015 London were well handled, with the gradual revelations aiding our growing understanding of the key characters.

I grew up in south Glasgow, so many of the places mentioned in this book are very familiar to me, but I was delighted to note the three references in the story to the Ommer School of Music in Dixon Avenue, Queenspark. His habit of grabbing people by the earlobe might have left an impression, but on making enquiries recently, no-one seems to know what became of him. Runaway’ is described in the blurb as a crime thriller but is really a road trip adventure that happens to encompass a crime. Gradually we see how his whole life has been affected by the things that happened back then, with this trip giving him a chance for some kind of resolution and even redemption.

I think you “feel” the writing in the same way as you sense and respond to the dynamics of a melody. While they reminisce their brief but intense experiences on the road so long ago, the mystery of what happened to their tight group will be revealed.

Also my son owns Church on the Hill at Battlefield Monument which is mentioned as Jack walks up the hill from the Victoria Hospital. Mention spéciale pour l’aspect "road trip" et le contexte des 60’s, décrit de manière très évocatrice par l’auteur - on s’y croirait ! The adventure and misadventure; the fun and panic-filled adrenalin that those five young friends discovered o But it's also a place where young people can find themselves manipulated and used, and caught up in events they can't control. This works well, allowing the two time periods to inform and mirror each other, as Jack and two his band mates retrace their steps fifty years later. Laing was something of a media celebrity himself, controversial in his theories and treatments, and was in many ways a quintessential product of that decade. Along the way, the boys rescue Maurie's cousin from her drug-dealing boyfriend and she becomes one of the gang as they finally arrive in London and start looking round for the streets paved with gold.
