About this deal

In 1973, Clannad came in first place in the annual folk festival in Letterkenny, County Donegal, and were offered a deal with Philips Records, which they negotiated themselves. Around this time, Maire noted that although the group had lost fans of their traditional folk sound, they had gained new ones as a result of their commercial success.

The combination of upright bass, flutes and African percussion with Maire's evanescent voice would develop a lush sound over successive albums.Maire Brennan played harp and sang, brothers Pol and Ciaran did nice things with flutes, acoustic bass and piano. In 1974, the band followed their debut album with Clannad 2, released by Gael Linn Records and produced by Dónal Lunny, the founder of Planxty and The Bothy Band.
