In May 2012, Frozen Planet won in three categories at the British Academy Television Craft Awards, collecting prizes for best sound, best editing, and best photography. Here on the high slopes of Mount Kenya, during the day the tropical sun keeps the cold at bay, but at night the frost descends.

Warming summers are melting the permafrost deep within the soil, causing the ground to thaw and, in places, the land to collapse. Our planet is powered by the oceans, entangled in plants, and home to animals of every colour, shape and size. To stand any chance of saving what remains of our frozen planet and saving ourselves from the devastating consequences of its loss, we must stick to this commitment and honour it no matter how challenging it might be.

Frozen Planet II accompanies the TV series and was released in hardcover format on 11 September 2022 to coincide with the series debut in the UK. In the United States, Frozen Planet premiered on the Discovery Channel on 18 March 2012 with Alec Baldwin replacing David Attenborough as narrator of the first six episodes. To catch a goat-like chamois, they risk it all using one of the most daring and breathtaking hunting techniques ever witnessed. Animals highlighted in this episode include the polar bear ( Ursus maritimus), the red phalarope ( Phalaropus fulicarius), the Arctic tern ( Sterna paradisaea), the common eider ( Somateria mollissima), the snowy owl ( Bubo scandiacus), the Lapland bunting ( Calcarius lapponicus), the Arctic wolf ( Canis lupus arctos) hunting for muskoxen ( Ovibos moschatus), the king penguin ( A.These are loveable characters that offer all the fun of stone-stealing (to build high-rise nests) and poo-squirting (to keep faeces off the nests). In the far north of our planet lies the largest land habitat on earth, home to snow-covered forests and the icy open tundra. The accumulated skills and wisdom of decades enable them to capture these extraordinary images and put them together with a grace that is seemingly effortless. It follows crows in the hope of finding carrion, but it must not stay long, for it shares the forest with a far larger but equally hungry big cat, the Siberian tiger.
