Too much of the story was focused around the writing angle for me personally, and a lot of the sub plots didn't engage, often just feeling like they were there to create drama for drama's sake, for instance the whole plot with Fraser as an alternative love interest for Otty, and likewise with Daphne. Nor did I understand the plot about Otty's father wanting her to be with his friend Sheila's son and being so imposing about the matter. Furthermore, the end obstacle could be seen coming almost from the very beginning, and made things so predictable. I really enjoyed the romance. Like really, really enjoyed it. It’s sometimes hard to include romance in books like this that are so suspenseful, and it is especially hard when you don’t know if those in that romance pairing are guilty. Despite the unknowns, I found myself swooning over this guy and I really loved the two together!

I was worried about this book. Sure, it had a lot of things going for it: a synopsis that called to me (thrills, mystery, suspense, and murder, oh my!), a cover with antlers on it (I love antlers), and, most importantly, it's by Ashley Elston. I've been a fan of Ashley's since reading her debut The Rules for Disappearing over three years ago (and staying up way, way too late reading it, I might add), and I've been waiting for more of her words to eat up. So This Is Our Story came along, Ashley sent me an ARC (I'm the official unofficial co-captain of her fan club), and I couldn't help but be a bit worried: with all the book had going for it--and all I hoped to glean from it--what if I didn't love it? I found the writing team at Ensign Media interesting (I didn’t know anything about script writing – isn’t it great that books give us so much!) and inspiring. There’s lots of tensions in the group as a whole as well as between Otty and Joe. Deadlines and jealousies play out with great effect. Oh Daphne, you thought you were playing a very clever game didn’t you … I felt lots of empathy towards Joe for the task Russ gave him (he did set himself up for that though) and how that had the potential of blowing the chance of any type of relationship with Otty. This Is Our Story had the potential to be all shades of amazing. Its premise sounds like a mix between The Raven Boys and With Malice. With Malice and Dangerous Girls do a magnificent job of attaching history to their characters. Their friendships are rich and layered, full of inside jokes and shared experiences. This Is Our Story is mainly told from Kate's perspective and she doesn't provide the same depth we would have gotten from a River Point boy. We do get chapters narrated by the murderer, but they're largely superfluous and deliberately devoid of personal detail so we don't know who it is.Honestly the only issue I had with This Is Our Story was the romance, and even that was only minor. It flowed with the storyline well, but it seemed a little cliché. But that's my ONLY complaint.

It was interesting how most every chapter from Kate’s perspective began with a brief text message exchange providing insight to the timeline. I also enjoyed how every other chapter was either from the killer’s POV or was an interrogation transcript. It’s impossible to guess who the killer is based on the perspective, though. Twin brothers Ronald "Ronnie" Kray (24 October 1933 – 17 March 1995) and Reginald "Reggie" Kray (24 October 1933 – 1 October 2000) were English gangsters who were the foremost perpetrators of organised crime in the East End of London during the 1950s and 1960s. Ronald, commonly called Ron or Ronnie, most likely suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.[4] These two men, along with their contemporaries on the other manors, were of their times. They had the code of honour and ethics, but still thought a lot of their family. Kate's best friend Reagan was hilarious and so loyal to Kate. I thought Reagan was a great side character and an even better friend. I really liked that the author focused on the strong friendship between the two girls. The group of boys in this book were very intriguing and mysterious. I couldn't help but want to get into their heads just like Kate did. One boy also happened to be very swoon-worthy, but I don't want to spoil anything with that. All I will say is that the romance that was in this book was unexpected but so perfect and sweet. It was a great addition to this story.Based on the last 5 mins, if not the whole book, I feel like I've just been on a rollercoaster of emotion, as to whether or not I would get the ending my heart desired... but I'm not going to tell you if I did or not!
