Above: Moving onto image quality at higher sensitivities, I shot a still-life image with the S5 at every ISO value from 100 to 51200 ISO, using the Lumix S 20-60mm at 50mm f11. I shot in JPEG and RAW, but in the absence of RAW support from Adobe at the time I made this review, I’m comparing the JPEGs here. In my video review I’ll show you a closer look at each value, starting at 100 ISO and ending at 51200 ISO, but just now here’s a cropped view of the 3200 ISO sample above. Panasonic says the S5 has dual native ISO like the S1H which means at a certain point the noise levels and dynamic range should improve. Unlike the S1H though, the switch happens automatically on the S5 and Panasonic isn’t officially saying where it happens, so you tell me if you can see it here. Either way, I’d say the images look very clean and detailed up to 3200 ISO, remain very respectable at 6400 and 12800 ISO, and only really begin to suffer at 25600 and 51200 ISO, but even then still retain a good level of detail.

The official battery life rating of the S5 is 440 shots (via the rear monitor), or 470 shots via the EVF. You can also enable a power-saving mode which will deliver 1,500 images. It can store up to 10 LUTs and adds the ability to apply the LUT to the footage as you shoot. Doing do means you lose post-processing flexibility, putting greater emphasis on getting exposure and white balance right in-camera, but it lets you achieve the look you want straight out of camera. S5 IIX features You may not notice them at first, but the finned vents of the fan on either side of the viewfinder show that the S5 II is serious about video.

You can choose between two levels of JPEG compression and accompany them with RAW files if desired, although no compressed RAW options are available. There’s six different aspect ratios including two wider than normal, plus a bunch of framing guides too from tall and narrow to extra wide. HLG is available for high dynamic range photos for display on compatible devices and you can record them in 4k or at the full resolution. There are a few different color profiles available for creators who want to snap ready-to-share JPGs: standard, portrait, vivid, and landscape, as well as the film-like L.ClassicNeo and L.Monochrome looks. Note that there's some overlap with the V-Log, HLG, and CineD2 video profiles because you can use any of those for stills and vice versa. Dual-band Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) and Bluetooth 5 are also on board. The former enables file transfer and remote operations via the Panasonic Lumix Sync mobile app (available for Android and iOS), while the latter speeds up the pairing process for wireless remotes. The Nikon Z6 II has a very similar feature set, though it wins extra points for its superior autofocus system (which doesn't 'flutter' like the S5), beautiful electronic viewfinder and faster burst shooting. Image and video quality are similar to that of the S5: not surprising given it probably uses a version of the same sensor. The S5 does have an upper hand in the video department, with 10-bit 4:2:2 internal capture (though the Z6 II can output 10-bit Log over HDMI), and the ability to display waveforms and a vectorscope. It's a tough call, ultimately coming down to what you'll primarily be shooting – stills or video. The camera's battery life rating is a rather disappointing 370 shots per charge, per CIPA standard testing methods. As always, these numbers tend to significantly underestimate how many shots you can typically expect (unless your shooting style is very energy-intensive). A 370 shot-per-charge rating will typically give you plenty of charge for a day's shooting, but you'll want to keep a USB power source near to hand for intensive shoots. A power-saving mode gives a rating of 1,250 shots per charge for viewfinder shooting. The Lumix S5 is ideal for vlogging and can be used with the optional Panasonic DMW-SHGR1 grip.
