About this deal

I think one's enjoyment of this book will hinge on how one feels about the main character and fragmented literary style. I happened to love Lizzie's dry, self-deprecating wit and sharp, observational humor. In fact, she reminded me of several of my favorite friends here on GoodReads. And reading this felt like spending the night at a cozy little dive bar with a charming new friend, discussing our rising sense of dread about an uncertain future, but also finding flashes of humor and hope through shared laughter and liquor. This book is very much in the style of Dept. of Speculation – which I described in my review of that book as an elliptical and aphoristic style.

That being said: I was WRONG. The writing / content was way better than I expected it to be! The writing was the perfect level of informative and fun. It also had (really cool!!) fun facts for that older sibling to enjoy the book too (gotta love a book that can be differentiated :). This book provides a delightful introduction to weather for young children. The illustrations are cheerful and filled with smiles; they are also very inclusive as they picture the children learning about the weather. I really want this book to work for me. After I read her last one, which I found forgettable, I would hear women slightly younger than me glow on about it on podcasts, best read of the last decade, etc. It just didn't have that impact on me. I was looking forward to this one because of the librarian aspect but it turns out - not actually a librarian. And yes this is the hill I will die on. As well as inspiring you to take a deeper look at the sky above us and at our changing climate, this book will teach you new facts about weather and climate, and record-breaking statistics to really upgrade your weather small-talk.I did like her last novel, Department of Speculation. I gave that a B+ before I joined Goodreads and adopted this rating system. A white sunshade was held over me day and night so that no cold or heat or dust or grit or dew might inconvenience me. The Met Office's latest book, 'Very British Weather',takes readers on a journey through weather and climate conditions in the UK, season by season. It explores the wisdom and wonders of weather, with facts on weather and climate and historical gems from our archive featured throughout as well as myth-busting trivia and activities.

This is such an informative little book! It is highly educational, creating a fun atmosphere for learning about our weather, the seasons, and how it affects our world.

I was disappointed to see a statement about the sun being 4.5 billion years old. There's no scientific evidence of that. It's a theory, but it's presented in this book as fact. It's misinformation like this which promote fallacies into becoming public knowledge. Other than that, all the other information appears to be correct.

Weather Book: Why it Happens and Where it Comes From The Weather Book: Why it Happens and Where it Comes From

It goes through all the seasons and teaches about what to expect during what weather. Is the sun shining today? Put on your coolest shades! There's even a bit of science to explain how rain works, why thunderstorms happen and more! Look outside after a thunderstorm and you might see a rainbow. The illustrations are so much fun - vibrant, colorful and exciting. I loved the variety of characters present and bold style! It really ‘is’ like poetry .... and/ or perhaps one might say it’s similar to short stories - or stream-of consciousness - writing. Gay, Roxane (7 February 2014). "Bridled Vows (Published 2014)". The New York Times . Retrieved 6 January 2021. Should we get a gun, Ben asks? But it's America. You don't even get on the news if you shoot less than three people".Lizzie Benson slid into her job as a librarian without a traditional degree. But this gives her a vantage point from which to practice her other calling: she is a fake shrink. For years, she has tended to her God-haunted mother and her recovering addict brother. They have both stabilized for the moment, but Lizzie has little chance to spend her new free time with husband and son before her old mentor, Sylvia Liller, makes a proposal. She's become famous for her prescient podcast, Hell and High Water, and wants to hire Lizzie to answer the mail she receives: from left-wingers worried about climate change and right wingers worried about the decline of western civilization. Maybe I can stop having that dream now…the one where my brother shows up and says, ‘I can die now’”.
