Callanan ( Paris by the Book) builds a charming story from a woman’s midlife crisis…Callanan keeps things moving with the question of the convent’s fate hanging over the characters, and carefully outlines Claire’s complicated feelings about her relationships and vocation. This is a delight.”When in Rome is a love story, a tug-of-war between fate and faith, and Claire is its funny, thoughtful, searching guide. In fact, she’s one of the most delightful narrators I’ve encountered inrecentfiction, full of genuinecuriosity and relatable contradictions. I happily followed her through the winding streets of Rome, and I’d go anywhere else she’d care to take me.” Claire, a 52 year-old single mom and real-estate agent who specializes in churches, finds herself at her 30 year college reunion considering the question "what's next?" and not knowing the answer. An opportunity arises for her to help a struggling convent in Rome and Claire travels there for a consultation. Claire had come close to joining a convent as a teenager and, once in Rome, finds herself drawn to the 3 remaining nuns and the beautiful, historic city. She starts to consider taking vows and joining the convent but neither her best friend nor her daughter understand her reasoning and the appearance in Rome of her close friend, Marcus, complicates her thought process as it opens the door to the possibility of a middle-age love as well. I adored this book. Maybe part of it was that it had tied to Milwaukee, where I live. I recognized some of the things the Claire had done. Rome waited for her Monday, but tonight was Saturday, and Claire was in New Haven, Connecticut, at her thirtieth college reunion. One night, one person she wanted to see, ten lies told before she did.

Paolo has been staring at her for some time, which is unusual, or would be until Claire realizes that she's not answered his question. She walks, imagines finding Monica's face in the crowd. Monica would take one look at Claire, the smile on her face, and tell her, yes, this is perfectly right! Claire will believe this, too, then. She has found that Rome can favor imagination over reality, and that acquiescence to this can serve her. You can always count on a Sarah Adams rom-comto be equal parts funny, sweet, and swoony. When in Rome is all that and more with characters who will make you wish they were your friends, a quirky town you’ll want to visit, anda romance you’ll want to read again and again.” —Sophie Sullivan, author of Ten Rules for Faking It Sometimes people decide not to like me for the most arbitrary reasons. Sometimes it's just because I'm famous, and successful people make them uncomfortable. Sometimes it's because I voted differently than them. And sometimes it's because I frowned outside their favorite yogurt shop and now they want to cancel me forever because they think I'm against yogurt.”

When it was the other way around, when it was Claire correcting Paolo's English and not him her Italian, the word in question was fluffy. That's how he'd described another customer's voice once. On the positive side, I enjoyed the descriptions of the Italian scenery. Beautiful, descriptive, flowing language really made the setting a character in and of itself, probably my favorite one. Monica shakes her head but leans in for the embrace, and when she speaks, still deep in the hug, it's muffled, because her words must work their way through so much fabric. Claire can't see everyone else yet, but she can hear Monica's question clearly.

As a secular Jew, I couldn't relate to Claire's struggle with her faith at all. But that's why we read fiction, right, to inhabit other lives. And visit other places. Rome is a character in this book, and Liam's depictions of it were a huge part of the novel's appeal. The nuns were pretty winning, too.Cancel that Alitalia flight. All the fun of a trip to Italy—and a Yale education, for that matter—can be found for a fraction of the price in Liam Callanan’s delightful novel When In Rome. With breathtaking descriptions of secret corners of the Eternal City and New Haven, this novel introduces us to Claire, who, at 52, is ready to resolve issues of faith, passion, and obligation that have dogged her since she was 22. Only she has to think about things a little longer. So hold on. And while you wait, prepare to be charmed by this clever, engagingbook." A hot splotch of tears falls onto my thigh and I realize I’m crying. I don’t think I’m supposed to be crying thinking of those things. I’m a two-time Grammy winner and I have a signed contract for ninety million dollars with the top record label in the business, so I shouldn’t be crying. I don’t deserve to be crying. And I definitely shouldn’t be in my old car in the middle of the night driving frantically away from everything. The list of people I’ll be letting down runs through my mind like a scroll, and I can barely withstand the guilt. I’ve never not shown up for an interview before. I hate disappointing people or acting as if my time is more valuable than theirs. At the start of my career I vowed I would never get a big head. It’s important to me to be as accommodating as possible—even if it hurts.

And also too young; it's impossible for him to say it to her without a smile. Some weeks ago, she'd finally offered him her name, which he accepted and then never used. Too intimate, apparently. But for her to use his felt, and apparently was, totally natural. I wanted to like this book. Rome is an enchanting city, and the author’s descriptions made me long to see it again! But Claire’s false belief in mutually-exclusive futures and her indecision about those futures dragged on and on. She grins and her wrinkles multiply. “Go have your break, darlin’. And even better, have it with a good man who’ll treat you right.” She nods over my shoulder to The Pie Shop.” An encounter with an endangered convent in Rome prompts a middle-aged American woman to consider whether she is called to be a nun.

A] sweet romantic comedy . . .
