A 2013 review by Hurlburt and his colleagues points to huge individual differences between people in how much time they spend talking to themselves in their head that have been uncovered through studies using DES. The average frequency of inner speaking across those who took part in the research, at 23%, masks a huge range: from 100% – i.e. for some people, every time they were sampled they had some kind of internal monologue or inner conversation going on – to 0% – i.e. some people were never speaking to themselves internally. If there's something that you're so intimate with, you never really stopped to think about it – it's not surprising that when you look at it, it's more interesting than you thought,” says Charles Fernyhough, a psychologist at the University of Durham and author of The Voices Within.

Even the location of human emotions could be mapped to specific locations. If there was ever any doubt the brain ruled the body, this was being dispelled almost weekly as we learned how brain function interpreted the senses and drove motor function. In DES, you carry around a device as you go about your normal day-to-day activities. When it beeps, you tune into what was going on in your mind right before the sound. At the end of the day, you debrief with a psychologist who asks questions to get at exactly what was in your head in that moment, and what form it took: words, pictures, an emotion, a physical sensation, or something else. That’s the dangerous part… you start to believe your thoughts are real and not just mere thoughts, they become something they’re not – facts. Memory is a fascinating thing. Many brain regions are working together to help you remember and recall loads of information before an important exam—and forget the moment it is over. Cognition: thinkingWe use cognition to solve problems and make decisions. We do it all the time: for instance, finding our way home every day or choosing what to cook for dinner. Depending on the problem, we approach problem-solving in different ways: sometimes we go for accuracy, at other times speed is appreciated. You you ever look at your person And think to yourself wow How did i land you you’re the most beautiful human i’ve ever seen in my life And you love me for me not what i have Or what i can do for you But simply because we’re meant to be And that’s the best feeling in the world

For instance, you can take your body for a run in the morning, even though the weather is cold and the bed is so cozy and warm: this is how your mind influences your body.

If I were a young clinician or scientist wondering which area of research to enter there would be no hesitation – the mysteries of our most complex organ and the seat of the soul await. It wasn’t until I ventured outside of my head and spoke to someone about it, actually opened up and sought another opinion, that I realised what I had been doing to myself for so many years. Whatever was happening, it’s likely that your true inner experience – what you were thinking about just before you started trying to figure out what you were thinking about – is now lost to the mists of time. I have to actually boss my brain sometimes – tell myself that I am in control of what goes on inside my head.

The Big Idea of today; The four voices in your head are the world, the flesh, the devil and the Holy Spirit. Your job is to figure out which one is speaking and then make the adjustment. You can control the narrative that’s in your head. With the inner speech that arises naturally... I see it as part of a conversation, that kind of ongoing conversation that in the long run is happening with other people,” says Fernyhough. “It's part of a social dialogue that becomes internalised, so it has a different sort of dynamic, it has a different flow, it happens for different reasons.” There’s a lot going on inside my head at any given moment. I’m constantly thinking about what I need to do next, worrying about things that could go wrong, and trying to come up with ideas. It can be tough to keep everything straight, but that’s just how my mind works. So we have a limited tank of attentional resources. And there’s things we do during the day that build up our resources, like taking a break … and there’s things we do that deplete our resources,” Mark said. A brain tumor can cause a range of different symptoms, depending on its size and location. The most common symptoms may include headaches, seizures or convulsions, and difficulty thinking, speaking or finding words. If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to see a doctor so that the cause can be investigated.

Later studies suggested that some of these changes may have been temporary—and part of his social functions had also recovered over the years. Nevertheless, the case of Phineas Gage shows us that personality (which is something non-physical) can be affected by changes in the physical body. These voices in our head are affecting the narrative that is in our brain and God has given us the ability to take control of that narrative. When he says, “Above all else, guard your heart,” he would not tell us to do that if he would not also equip us to be able to do it. Our mind (thoughts and feelings that we cannot touch, see, or in other ways express as material objects) can control the body and make it do what we want. When life gets you down, are you able to turn that negative voice inside your head into something positive? There are peaks and valleys of focus throughout the day, and this corresponds with the ebb and flow of our attentional resources,” Mark explained. “And so to me, it makes the most sense for people to become aware of what your own natural rhythm is, for when you are best able to apply your attentional resources and also when it’s time to pull away to replenish.” Being aware is an essential feature of the mind—but when asked what the mind does, many people would point at another ability: thinking.
