About this deal

Often just called KT tape, elastic therapeutic tape is an elastic cotton strip with an acrylic adhesive on one side. It was invented in the 1970s by Dr. Kenzo Kase, whose Kinesio® Tex Tape is still popular today, though many other types have since cropped up. Kase created Kinesio tape with a proprietary blend of cotton and nylon. It’s designed to mimic the skin’s elasticity so you can use your full range of motion. The tape’s medical-grade adhesive is also water-resistant and strong enough to stay on for three to five days, even while you work out or take showers. KT Tape is an elastic adhesive tape commonly used to treat musculoskeletal dysfunction,” explains Leada Malek, D.P.T., C.S.C.S., a physical therapist and board-certified sports specialist.

Wu WT, Hong CZ, Chou LW. The kinesio taping method for myofascial pain control. Evid Based Complement Alternat Med. 2015;2015:950519. doi:10.1155/2015/950519 Depending on the pain and severity, various application styles can help with the following common conditions. Marko says that the technical way to use KT tape is to apply it with the intention of “turning on” or “turning off” muscles, to activate them, or to encourage your body to rely on other muscles instead.Depending on your injuries or specific areas of pain, your physical therapist or other healthcare provider may recommend using KT tape on your: For the most part, preparation is going to be straightforward. You want to ensure that the skin on and surrounding your knee is as clean and dry as possible. This means removing any dirt as well as ensuring you’re not using any sorts of oils or lotions on your skin either. Doing this prepares your skin for the best adhesion when it comes to keeping the tape in place without risking it slipping o coming off. Or you’ve been curious since Olympian Kerri Walsh Jennings showed up to a volleyball match with bright blue tape on her shoulder. The online survey (SurveyMonkey® www.surveymonkey.com) included one respondent consent question and 29 questions that represented seven distinct areas:1) respondent demographics, 2) clinical perceptions about KT, 3) clinical application of standard, specialty, infused KT, topicals, and clinical measures, and 4) KT education, and referral.

When the tape is applied to your body, it recoils slightly, gently lifting your skin. It is believed that this helps to create a microscopic space between your skin and the tissues underneath it. Creates space in joints Finally, we come to the part where the rubber meets the road: applying KT Tape to your knee. There are a variety of ways to tape the knee depending on the type of pain you’re trying to prevent or the support you wish to provide to the joint. Taping for general knee pain or swelling will take a different form than taping for full knee support, for example, and we’ll go over each in turn. Be aware, however, that this is basic information and for more detailed KT Tape application it’s best to speak to a chiropractor, physical therapist, or another expert on using KT Tape to knee joints. General Knee Pain Application: The tape usually lasts between three to five days before naturally peeling off, but if you want to remove earlier, gently pull or apply lotion around the edges to help loosen the adhesive. Cut the tape to the proper length depending on the injury or surface area, and trim the corners so the tape is rounded at each end. This will help prevent the edges from prematurely lifting and snagging on clothes. Nosaka, K. (1999). The Effect of Kinesio Taping® on Muscular Micro-Damage Following Eccentric Exercises. 15th Annual Kinesio Taping International Symposium Review. (pp. 70-73) Tokyo, Japan: Kinesio Taping Association. While it’s not visible to the naked eye, KT tape can alleviate pain and flush lymphatic drainage (the network of vessels and organs under your skin) by microscopically lifting the skin from the tissue, says Yu. When the lymphatic and fluid system is congested with inflammation, various chemicals accumulate in the interstitial space (the fluid-filled space between the cell membrane and skin or muscles and the circulatory system) ultimately resulting in pain. “The lifting from the tape increases that interstitial space and allows for decreased inflammation in the affected area,” Yu says. Some physical therapists think the tape changes the information your sensory nervous system is sending about pain and compression in your body. And one study found that it effectively relieved pain and increased range of motion in people with arthritis in their knees. Guney Deniz H, Kinikli G, Onal S , et al. THU0727-HPR Comparison of kinesio tape application and manual lymphatic drainage on lower extremity oedema and functions after total knee arthroplasty. Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases 2018;77:1791. 10.1136/annrheumdis-2018-eular.3360 Don’t expect KT tape to solve any ongoing pain or other issues. Research has yet to show any lasting benefit from using it.
