Chapman, Wilson (March 3, 2022). " The Afterparty: Composer Daniel Pemberton on Telling the Same Story in Eight Different Genres". Variety . Retrieved March 6, 2022. Travers, Ben (March 4, 2022). " The Afterparty Finale: The Creator and the Killer on Hidden Clues, Key Secrets, and Hungry Hippos". IndieWire . Retrieved March 4, 2022. Wow, what a wild ride this one was! The story centers on Lizzie, who has been in love with her coworker Dean for years and is just waiting for him to reciprocate. When she finally gets up the nerve to tell him, he beats her to it by telling her that he is in a serious relationship with one of her friends. That friend just happens to go missing later that night, and the rest of the book is focused on trying to figure out what happened. The story is told in linear fashion and solely from Lizzie’s POV. The ending left me with more questions than answers, characters I didn't expect to be instrumental to the missing character and Lizzie to my mind with the wrong person. The first season takes place at a high school reunion after-party with each episode "a different character's perspective" of what happened that night. [6] Critic Olivia Rutigliano noted that it is an example of "the millennial whodunnit," a new subgenre of murder mystery in which the investigation is a vehicle for characters to find second chances, personal fulfillment, and a departure from boring or oppressive daily life (through the feeling that their life has become a new genre). It’s not true that there is a house style to New Zealand television drama, but there are some threads that show up here quite often. There’s the fusion of high stakes with comic elements, well-executed in previous Robyn Malcolm projects like Outrageous Fortune and Far North from earlier this year. This is likely both a natural outflow of the material and an attempt at going broad, which is understandable in a small market like ours. Less forgivable is a tendency toward caricature, with roles reduced to heroes and villains – a pernicious issue that infects plotting and scripts and flows out into performances that leave our fine actors grasping like the soap stars they once were. Neither is remotely present in After the Party, a six-part drama debuting on TVNZ that explores the lingering, crazy-making aftermath of a boozy party, featuring characters all on a spectrum between fallible and broken. It’s so tightly wound it barely takes a moment to blink, much less wink. I’ve seen the first three episodes and have no idea where they’re heading with this thing – it’s gritty, wrenching and highly confronting. On the night of their work's Christmas party, they go out into the garden where Dean confesses his love.......for someone else, other work colleague, Rebecca. Apparently they have been dating for a year & Lizzie had no idea & feels humiliated & ends up leaving early, claiming illness. The next day, two police officers turn up to question Lizzie about the party as it seems that Rebecca never made it home afterwards & no-one knows where she is or what has happened to her. What a thrilling book! I was fascinated by the characters and twisting storyline. Lost a lot of sleep over it’ Anu, NetGalley Characters that's are keeping secrets, acting very strange! They made the reader want to no more it was so inviting to read and not put down.

Zoë Chao as Zoë Zhu, [10] She was Aniq's high school crush, and following her divorce from Brett, later his girlfriend.

Weintraub, Steve (January 29, 2022). "Chris Miller and Phil Lord on The Afterparty and Having Every Episode Tell the Story Using a Different Visual Format and Genre". Collider. At 60% into the book, yes I was reading on a kindle, I couldn't put it down, so keen to know where the missing character was and why still no murder. The story raced along but with no clear clues or motive it kept me gripped for hours whilst I tried to find out more. WOW!!! I. COULD. NOT. PUT. THIS. DOWN. I read it all in ONE sitting! It was amazing! The storyline was captivating and engrossing while the main characters, Suzie and Emily, were so well written and interesting that I couldn't get enough of them. Plenty of suspense and twists to keep you guessing until the very end! Bravo!!’ Yamil, NetGalleyAnd what about Diana’s fellow inmates: many of whom were women, whose ‘crime’ was to make tea for fascists and type up their membership lists? What other lists of names might they have typed up if their beloved leader had come to power? What might they have done and should they have been imprisoned for what they might have done? This is the great achievement of After the Party, to take as unsympathetic a group of people as British fascist women and make them vividly alive, even sympathetic, while the horrible facts of history still hang over their actions. We are forced to understand and forced to make some kind of judgement. Isabel begins her testimony with the events leading up to the wedding, told in the style of a melodramatic thriller. [nb 3] When Isabel's mental health deteriorated following the loss of her husband, Alexander, an unsympathetic Edgar threatened to place Isabel in a conservatorship. After Travis confronted her with Edgar's alleged crimes at the wedding rehearsal, Isabel began to ponder if Edgar was intentionally making her insane in a bid to gain control of her wealth. Her suspicions were confirmed when Grace and Zoë pointed out that the pills Edgar gave her for insomnia were actually Adderall, proving he was deliberately trying to incapacitate her. Once she realized Edgar had also tampered with her speech for the reception, a paranoid Isabel switched the slices of cake he brought to her table, fearing he had poisoned the slice intended for her. As Aniq points out some inconsistencies with the poisoned cake theory, the police arrive to the mansion.

Lizzie also had a massive vein of selfishness to go along with her passiveness this was showcased by her eventual actions and willingness to let the status quo be if it meant she’d now get what she wanted all along. Even her sheer determination to discover what had happened to Rebecca was fuelled in most part by Dean’s approval whatever she told herself otherwise. She was one of those people who appears a benevolent saint and actually believes her own hype and pure motives when the truth is far different.Let me preface this by saying I've never read a novel by Georgina Lees before, so when I speak about her writing skills, it's only with this book in mind. This is a rare situation where I felt like Lees showed she can write her cheeks off, but the content itself was too on the safe side. GEORGINA IF YOU'RE LISTENING I, an irrelevant reader, would love to see you write a character-driven contemporary fiction with a lil side of mystery. You've got da skills girl, don't settle for mainstream thriller content. The story is skillfully written, but at the same time the events leading to her imprisonment are slowly progressing and are overpowered by the trivial events, mostly parties. Thus, making you feel unsettle, wanting more from the story. After The Party is a historical novel at the times of WW2. The main character is Phyllis and it’s told from her perspective in different time periods. The book opens in 1979 as Phyllis gets out of prison. Aniq and Zoë are celebrating one year together following last season's events. They attend the wedding of Zoë's sister, Grace, to an eccentric Silicon Valley businessman named Edgar. When Edgar and his pet lizard Roxana are found dead the following morning, Aniq calls Danner for help. Danner, who left the police to write a book about Xavier's murder, agrees. Over the phone, Aniq tells her his side of the story, with the same romcom tone of the testimony he gave a year prior. Aniq also tells Danner he did not want to call the police out of concern for Grace, whom he witnessed put something in Edgar's drink the night before. Lizzie has been in love with Dean for three years but Dean hasn’t even given Lizzie a second look so when Lizzie gets a job offer in London which promises to launch her art career Lizzie finally feels ready to move to London in pursuit of a new a fresh start of her dream job until the night of the office Christmas party when Dean confesses his love for someone else who is one of Lizzies closest friends Rebecca and then a few days later the police show up on her doorstep saying Rebecca is missing

Danner questions Brett, who tells his story in the style of an action movie, in which he casts himself as a ne'er-do-well hero who is committed to his family.
