About this deal

Its features are far from what you'd expect from cheap distortion pedals. It's a good entry-level dirt box for those who prefer their distortion levels tweaked high. The Rowin Plexion is an affordable, compact distortion pedal with 2 gain modes (Normal and Bright), much like the amp it was modeled after. Now, there are three individual pedals combined here but there are two footswitches. What you can do is to switch between two different presets, selected via dip switches inside the pedal.

The current production model retains the original straightforward design. It has an Output knob for adjusting output gain, and a Distortion knob that adjusts the level of distortion. It goes from from crunchy to fuzz-like.For example, one preset could be the fuzz and overdrive, while the second preset could be all three. The Empress Effects Multidrive is another versatile stompbox – it includes a distortion, fuzz, and overdrive pedal in a single pedal. You can switch between different combinations and have access to a variety of toggle switches, 3-band EQ, and more. The best distortion pedals: final thoughts On another note, been trying some pedals through a Laney LC30II, Mooer Hustle drive, Mosky Obsessive Overdrive, Joyo Vintage Overdrive , Rowin Plexion and Caline Orange Burst. This "Plexi-drive" style mini guitar pedal offers an array of low gain tones as well as access to "hot-rodded" higher gain tones. If we're talking about great distortion pedals, the DS-1 is not to be ignored. The DS-1 Distortion pedal has made its way into my setup more than once or twice in my playing career.

The dual overdrive and distortion pedal features the 6-position mode selector to use the two pedals separately or in different configurations to combine them with a serial or parallel circuit. This way, you get quite a high range of tones to shape your sound. The Normal channel is by no means average by any stretch of the imagination, just adjust the gain, tone and volume dials to get the desired output and you will be amazed by its rich, full-bodied output that sounds just as good clean as it doesn’t heavily distorted.

The only issue? Boss discontinued the original pedal in 1991 and pre-owned models (particularly the Japanese manufactured versions) sell for an unusually high price tag. It should be noted that some pedals are heavily influenced by the original, as opposed to being a 100% clone. So for a few of the below pedals, the manufacturer has put their own twist or improvement on it. The Empress Effects Multidrive is the best distortion pedal for flexibility that is designed to deliver amp-like guitar tones. Buffered bypass is where the signal still passes through the pedal and its circuitry, but is boosted. This helps to strengthen the signal, and actually does more to preserve your signal than true bypass pedals. Buffered bypass pedals are especially helpful if you’re using a large signal chain (lots of pedals). There’s a magnetic flip-down compartment so you can swap out the battery without needing a screwdriver. Quite the time saver, particularly in the studio or on stage.

If you’re looking for a full and dark distorted tone, you need a pedal that emphasizes low-end and mid-range tones. Or you can use a separate EQ pedal to achieve similar effect. Versatility vs. UsabilityStart with the tone you want to emulate. Then consider the build quality, quality of components, and features you need. I was enamored by its simplicity, ruggedness, and sheer ability to mangle a pristine amp tone. This is a pedal I know well.

Caline Orange Burst FTW, none of the others came close, noodling on La Grange, the pedal sounded great whatever the settings, no-brainer, it had dimension and clarity the others didn't. My perfect pedal. Don't be fooled by the compact size of the Rowin LEF-324 Plexion pedal as it is more than tough enough to deal with some serious stage stomping when attached to any pedalboard so you can feel confident during any live performance. I’d go as far as to say that it’s become somewhat of an industry standard. And that’s not surprising considering it was initially released in the early 1980s.The RAT 2 is a surprisingly versatile distortion pedal with an unmistakable sound signature. It leans more to the "fuzz" side of the spectrum than many pedals featured on this list. The pedal is still capable of everything from light overdrive to heavy levels of distortion. The Danelectro 3699 fUZZ (and the much earlier cheapo, French Toast) are clones of the fOXX Tone Machine. Trey August 23, 2022 The RAT 2 is a true bypass pedal. True bypass pedals let your signal pass through the unit unaltered when the pedal isn't engaged, as is preferred by many tone purists. This can be especially important if you plan on using multiple pedals.
