About this deal

As towns and cities grow and we pave, concrete or tarmac (asphalt) over more and more, there is less and less actual ground e.g. soil available for rain water to soak into and dissipate.

However, gravel is not really suitable for steeper driveways and can cause difficulty with wheeling objects such as children’s buggies, wheelchairs or the similar across it and also getting your car on to it as it can cause wheels to spin. Resin bound paving is a mixture of resin binder and aggregate. Clear resin is used to fully coat each aggregate particle before laying. Enough resin is used to allow each aggregate particle to adhere to one another and to the base yet leave voids for water to permeate through. Resin bound paving provides a strong and durable surface that is suitable for pedestrian and vehicular traffic in applications such as pathways, driveways, car parks and access roads [ citation needed]. The precise maintenance required for a driveway will ultimately depend on the type or driveway you have, but there are a few important rules of thumb that you can follow to ensure that it continues to work well. Permeable paving allows water to pass through into the soil and gravel layers. It uses unique products with grids or patterns filled with gravel or grass. These robust and durable products can withstand heavy loads and traffic while also maintaining permeability.

Building a Soakaway or Rain Garden

U.S. Federal Highway Administration. Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center. McLean, VA. "Waste Glass." Recycled Materials in the Highway Environment. Accessed 2010-07-05. Porous asphalt is a permeable asphalt surface placed over a granular working platform on top of a large stone reservoir. The asphalt surface is made porous by building with open-graded friction coarse aggregate. The layer under the porous asphalt has the storage capacity to hold the collected water. Uses for Porous Asphalt

Rain water has to go somewhere and, even if you are not flooded, it might be affecting your neighbours downhill. Where it is not possible to keep garden space: keep paving to an absolute minimum and use a permeable paving material. In terms of design capabilities, permeable pavers offer versatility and elegance. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, to provide countless design options to suit any architectural style or personal preference. Moreover, they can be arranged in multiple patterns — from herringbone and circular to running bond — to enhance the visual appeal of driveways, walkways, and patios.Constant use and heavy vehicles can ruin the grass, but we often need the space our lawns provide for parking or functions. Instead of removing the grass and placing concrete or asphalt, grass pavers allow you to have the beauty and aesthetic of a lawn with the strength required for practical use. Some councils require a certain amount of lawn to be maintained on a property so again by using pavers you can have grass as well as parking space. If you would like to know more about the various different types of driveway construction then take a look at our different types of driveways project here. Types of Permeable Driveway and Their Advantages or Disadvantages Dust is a critical environmental factor that should be considered. Blowing dust will clog the pores of the porous asphalt surface and severely restrict percolation through the system’s top layer. Porous asphalt pavement systems should not be used in barren areas with moderate to high winds.

Inexperienced contractors –while these materials have been used for a long time, many driveway contractors are still unfamiliar with the technical detail. This means that you may find they install the driveway without using the correct sub-bases, and that your choice of porous material is a bit pointless. Always search for the best and most experienced contractor you can. We are pleased to announce, as from March 2023 PCA (Property Care Association) & IMA (Insulation Manufacture Association) brought out guidance for surveyors which has provided greater advice for surveyors, valuers and the mortgage industry whilst providing peace of mind to the consumer. Are you dreaming of the soft look of a natural ground cover, like grass or loose stones, but with the structural integrity of something sturdier, like bitumen or concrete? Thankfully, there’s no longer a need to choose between strength and style. With porous pavers, you can get the best of both worlds. The honeycomb cavities in the pavers can be filled with gravel, aggregates, wood chippings, mulch or soil to create an attractive free-draining driveway or path. If you are intending to lay or replace a hard surface to the front of your house, you must use permeable or porous materials; alternatively surface water run-off from an impermeable hard surface, such as concrete, must be directed to a permeable or porous surface to the front of your home. One thing we can say is that porous pavements, patios or drivewaysare the perfect way to prevent the damage that can be caused by water and ice and they protect the environment as well.
