It is very easy to read 5 or 6 band resistors if you already know how to use four band resistor color coding. 5 Band 100K Resistor Color Code It was a hell of a job to find the right values to reach a wide range of values, fairly equaly spread. Since the context usually makes it clear that we're talking about resistor values, it's common short-hand to drop the 'Ω' so that, for example, you can write "39K"* instead of "39KΩ".

I wrote a little code in excel, to whatch the effect of changing the value(s) of the resistor(s), which of course had to be within the common E12 range. The power rating of a resistor is one of the more hidden values. Nevertheless it can be important, and it's a topic that'll come up when selecting a resistor type. In the standard four band resistors, the first two bands indicate the two most-significant digits of the resistor's value. The third band is a weight value, which multiplies the two significant digits by a power of ten.You can use a multimeter to find out the actual resistance, but note that it will also vary slightly with temperature. In 6 band resistors, the temperature dependence is given by the last band (more on this below). To calculate the minimum and maximum resistance values, we multiply the resistance value by the tolerance percentage to come up with the following values:

I was just wondering if a 100K resistor as a pulldown resistor might conflict with internal eletronics, resulting in not pulling the port low all the way. On the most precise of resistors, a 6 th band may be present. The first three bands would be the significant figure bands, the 4 th the multiplier, the 5 th the tolerance, and the 6 th could be either reliability or temperature coefficient. There are also other possible variations, but these are some of the more common configurations.The fourth band is not always present, but when it is, represents tolerance. This is a percentage by which the resistor value can vary. The gold band in this example indicates a tolerance of ±5%, which can be represented by the letter J. This means that the value 52 MΩ can vary by up to 5% in either direction, so the value of the resistor is 49.4 MΩ - 54.6 MΩ. In a four-band resistor, which is the most common, the first two bands also represent the first two significant digits. The third band represents the multiplier. The fourth band represents the tolerance. How do you tell which band is first and last? The last, tolerance band is often clearly separated from the value bands, and usually it'll either be silver or gold. Five and Six Band Resistors Four band resistors have two bands for the value, one for the multiplier, and one for the tolerance.

In this case, the last two bands (i.e. the fifth and sixth bands) should be closely spaced, with a gap between the fourth and fifth bands. In a five-band resistor, the first three bands represent the first three significant digits. The fourth band represents the multiplier. The fifth band represents the tolerance. Band Four – Tolerance: Gives the value of the tolerance for the resistor. The most common values are 5% (designated by a gold band), and 10% (designated by a silver band). This example uses a gold band, giving us a tolerance of 5%.

The color coding for resistors is an international standard that is defined in IEC 60062. The resistor color code shown in the table below involves various colors that represent significant figures, multiplier, tolerance, reliability, and temperature coefficient. Which of these the color refers to is dependent on the position of the color band on the resistor. In a typical four-band resistor, there is a spacing between the third and the fourth band to indicate how the resistor should be read (from left to right, with the lone band after the spacing being the right-most band). In the explanation below, a four-band resistor (the one specifically shown below) will be used. Other possible resistor variations will be described after.
