About this deal

The Hi-Print wasn’t the fastest printer that we tested for this guide. However, it isn’t slow enough to be irritating, either. Although the Hi-Print didn’t offer the best image quality of all the models we tested, its prints were still crisp and largely true to the digital photos we used during testing.

My name is Mike Yawney. I have been reviewing tech products for over 15 years. Most of that time has been spent in front of the camera, talking tech and reviewing everything from smartphones to video games on one of Canada's most popular national morning television programs. We’d also suggest looking at the battery life of the printer, as it determines how many prints you can make before recharging. Look for printers with long-lasting batteries and consider whether they use standard batteries or rechargeable ones. The app would see the printer and tell us it was connected. Then, when we tried to print a photo, it produced an error. The problem? No printer was connected. We’ve enjoyed printing out our top snaps with this model, and it’s super easy to use via the app. It is a bit of a shame that it still charges via the now-outdated Micro USB port rather than USB-C (the newer Mini Evo has transitioned to the newer USB-C connector) but that’s more of a minor downside than a dealbreaker.

Finally. In addition to assessing print quality, we looked at how easy each of the printers was to use. We considered set up, overall useability, companion app functionality, battery life, durability, and the overall user experience. What You Should Know About Buying Portable Photo Printers I always have their latest smartphone in hand, a new laptop on my desk, and a game installed on my console, ready to review. The Tests The Mini 2, which connects to your phone via Bluetooth to retrieve photos and print them, is an easy way to print wallet-sized photos at home or on the go.

Next, using each printer’s companion app, we applied an image filter to our photos. We then printed the altered photo, to see how the images compared. While setting up the printer using a Bluetooth connection, it appeared on our smartphones as a Kodak printer. This conflicted with the Victure’s instructions that the device will appear in our Bluetooth pairing list as a “photo printer”. Since we already had a Kodak printer in our test group, it took quite some time to sort this issue out. We also noticed the printer’s companion app was an almost identical clone of the Kodak Mini 3 Retro’s app. The only distinguishable difference is that it was missing the Kodak logo. We then used both smartphones to snap a large variety of photos to test with our lineup of portable printers. On the Galaxy S21 Ultra, we took photos with the 108MP wide-angle camera, along with the 10MP telephoto lens. On the iPhone 12 Pro Max, we tested shots taken with the phone’s 12MP camera system. Once the shooting was complete, we selected an image from each of the following groups: Most of the portable photo printers you’ll find also produce images that are pretty tiny so they can remain compact and portable to bring with you on your travels. The “mini” and “square” sizes are the most popular, and we especially like the mini for making images that are ideal to keep in our wallet. We have a handful of snaps printed from the Mini Link 2 that we keep with us wherever we go, but this versatile image size is also great for a scrapbook or for pinning up on your fridge using magnets. The Instax Link Wide connects to your smartphone or tablet using Bluetooth, and is operated using the eponymous app for iOS or Android. These printers operate wirelessly, using WiFi or Bluetooth technology –or, in the case of the Kiipix, using a mirror! What paper do these printers take?

With various options available from multiple brands, choosing the best portable photo printer can be a bit daunting. These are the key factors to consider before buying: Printer type Think about why you want to print pictures on the move. Do you want the absolute best image quality? Choose a dye-sublimation printer. Do you want the cheapest prints, regardless of quality? Go for a Zink printer. Do you want the coolest prints? You'll probably want an Instax-based printer. The Zink paper tech in these is a bit different when compared to Instax models. Instead of ink, it uses colourful crystals embedded inside the paper – it’s a little slower to print but pictures don’t need time to develop. They also may look a bit more washed out than instant film, though, and we generally think the “Polaroid” charm is more present in models from Polaroid and Fujifilm’s Instax. The pros of this little printer are it makes beautiful prints, is intuitive to use and relies on Bluetooth connectivity. On the down side it’s bulkier than its smaller format siblings but it makes slightly larger prints so you need to weigh up your needs. None of the printers we tested offered exceptional battery life. Most could only print between 8 and 12 photos before needing a charge. If you want to print additional photos, you will need to carry a portable charger along. At 4.5” x 3.0” x 1.0”, and 7 ounces, the LifePrint 2x3 Hyperprint was by far the smallest and lightest we tested. It was also the fastest by far, taking around 30 seconds to print a photo. Some of this speed comes from using Zink (Zero-Ink) technology that combines the ink and photo paper.

Connecting to and Using the Mini 3 Retro

We began each test by determining ease of setup and compatibility with iOS and Android devices. We connected each printer to a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, and an iPhone 12 Pro Max. Even after finding the printer in our Bluetooth settings, our problems continued. We had nothing but issues trying to connect this portable photo printer to our Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. Unlike the wider one, we think this is slim and light enough to stash in your bag and bring on your travels, and the bigger square size works well for a wide range of shots including landscapes, portraits, close-ups and more. So what’s different about the Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo? It’s intended as a hybrid between analogue and digital, and actually has a 3-inch LCD screen on the rear. This allows the user to easily browse and select images to be printed, as well as do minor edits and adjust settings. The Mini Evo is designed to bridge the gap between an instant camera and an instant printer, and as such it can also be used to print photos directly off your smartphone’s camera roll. However, you’re not always after the most petite little prints and if you want something that’ll fit better in a photo album, on a pinboard or within a scrapbook, we think it’s well worth looking at the Instax Link Wide. In essence, it’s similar to any other Instax model on this list, but just a bit bigger and capable of churning out larger reproductions of your precious snaps.
