Playing against its rivals here, the spaciousness proved Denon’s main sonic advantage over a Naim Qb positioned alongside; switching between their two presentations of Walk on the Wild Side, the Qb’s sound was far boxier, relatively closed down up top, while the Home 350 clarified the shuffling rhythm and the consonants in the vocal, yet was not entirely natural, with a slight thinness from that dip in the local part of the vocal. Controlling the Home 150 is simple with the free HEOS app. This user-friendly app uses three main tabs that feature at all times - Rooms, Music and Now Playing. You can listen to the same music in every room or different music in different rooms. The app also lets you group HEOS compatible devices such as soundbars and AV receivers, for totally connected home audio. With over 110 years of experience, in the home and studio, Denon are a world-class audio brand. The Home 150 uses a 2-way speaker system to deliver a broad spectrum of sound, with excellent detail throughout. Powered by an efficient Class-D amplifier, the speaker produces a punchy sound with the smoothness you’d expect from Denon. There's also AirPlay 2 and voice assistant support. The latter is just as responsive as you'd expect from a dedicated solution, so it's useful. Being able to set up your own playlists across multiple services as well as opting to import music from your home network or an external hard drive is also useful and pretty simple to do.

We do provide installation options for built-in appliances providing it is simply a case of fitting the appliance and furniture doors. Ultimately its size and power have their limits at a point beyond which congestion and distortion become evident, but that point is impressively loud for a speaker so small. As for linearity, while its response to a sweep is less than smooth, with a notable push right down low then a dip from 60 to 100Hz, the balance is enjoyable in practice, spoken voices are tonally accurate, and there’s even a good sense of atmosphere around the different elements, an especially impressive achievement when working in mono. Positioning near a wall or a corner can enlarge the sound still more, at the cost of less predictable frequency response.The Home 150 supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, and is AirPlay 2 compatible. You can opt to use the Home 150 as a Bluetooth speaker and skip the Wi-Fi experience. But that’s in free space, listening from a metre away without much room effect. Put the Home 250 nearer a wall and the rear passive radiator comes more into play, filling in the dip from 90Hz upwards, and facilitating a rather smoother and more solid sound. The app allows for multi-room control of all of the Heos speakers in your house. Assuming, however, that the only speaker you have is this one, the app is still useful, as it provides access to the streaming services mentioned, as well as firmware updates. For what it's worth, we found it easier to stream audio from an iPhone via AirPlay 2 than the Heos app, which occasionally had some streaming hiccups and didn't work as well as Apple's native streaming does.

Playing solo, each Home 150 is an impressive little speaker – they’re mono, having a single 25mm tweeter and an 89mm woofer, but with scale and weight beyond the expectations of their size, a remarkably rich sound, even out in free space on a sturdy stand or table. Ultimately in size and power they have their limits, of course, but that point is impressively loud for a speaker so small.File support includes MP3, AAC and WMA, and stretches to Hi-Res with 192kHz/24-bit FLAC, WAV, ALAC and DSD 2.8/5.6MHz. These files can be played over the network or via the rear USB port. Some of its options will be overkill if you simply want something to stream music from your phone, but it's nice to have such flexibility. Being able to dip into your NAS drive's collection won't be necessary for all, but if you're one of those people, it's vital. Play a well-produced classic like Alan Parson Project’s The Raven and the 250 delivered a fine combination of nice warm bass line (coincidentally right on its preferred A) together with an excellent portrayal of the acoustic around the minimal drums of the second verse, the real and synthesised vocals kept clear and layered above, and the angled tweeters delivering the cymbal crashes in their stereo locations even when listening from a distance. The 9 centimetre bass-mid driver is housed in a closed-box design compartment. You would not find any port venting or passive radiator in the home 150. For such a small speaker, this is rather unusual. After all, most manufacturers are trying to squeeze the last bit of sound energy out of just a few liters. However, the closed cabinet is said to deliver a more precise bass and therefore might be of signifcant advantage in case of problematic acoustical conditions, especially when positioned on a shelf or in a corner.
