Top 100 Album-Jahrescharts" (in German). GfK Entertainment Charts. 1972. Archived from the original on 9 May 2015 . Retrieved 2 April 2022. the 1u is more stereo perfect, more warm, natural and balanced, bass is punch better and way more exciting and very emotional to listen too. The sound just hugs you around. The album's title Meddle is a play on words: a medal, and to interfere. [16] Storm Thorgerson of the art-design group Hipgnosis originally suggested a close-up shot of a baboon's anus for the album cover photograph. He was overruled by the band, who informed him via an intercontinental telephone call while on tour in Japan that they would rather have "an ear underwater". [22] The cover image was photographed by Bob Dowling. The image represents an ear, underwater, collecting waves of sound (represented by ripples in the water). [16] Thorgerson later expressed dissatisfaction with the cover, claiming it to be his least favourite Pink Floyd album sleeve: "I think Meddle is a much better album than its cover". [23] Thorgerson's colleague Aubrey Powell shared his sentiments, saying: " Meddle was a mess. I hated that cover. I don't think we did them justice with that at all; it's half-hearted." [24] The gatefold contains a group photograph of the band, which would be their last until 1987's A Momentary Lapse of Reason. [23] Release [ edit ] Fearless” is another matter. It focuses on the quiet dignity of an “idiot” following his own path up a hill while a crowd jeers from below that he’ll never make the top. As with much of Meddle, the guitar seems to proceed in slow motion, matching his humble climb, a stately ascending riff with ringing open strings that Waters played using an alternate tuning Barrett taught him years earlier. Gilmour takes the lead vocal, and his sleepy delivery—which usually implies a state of stoned beatitude—instead conveys sadness and futility beneath the determination. “Fearless” is among Pink Floyd’s greatest and most moving songs, heartbreaking even as the idiot seems to prevail over the voices that tell him he won’t.

If the band felt the story held any resonance with their own personal trials, they didn’t show it overtly. “Fearless” ends with a recording of a football crowd bellowing out the anthem of Liverpool F.C., framing its tale of perseverance with the simple good feeling of an underdog defeating a rival. Mason could never understand Waters’ insistence on this strange coda, especially given that the bassist was a devoted Arsenal supporter. Maybe his affinity was for the familial sentiment of the song itself, a Rodgers and Hammerstein show tune adopted by Liverpool fans after a local group turned it into a pop hit, rather than its sporting context. “Walk on with hope in your heart,” fans can be heard singing as “Fearless” fades out, “and you’ll never walk alone.” Colin Larkin, ed. no one disturbed to the other - and the harmonic is just more calm and pure to my ears without a doubt. Following these early experiments– called Nothings– the band developed Son of Nothings, which was followed by Return of the Son of Nothings as the working title of the new album, which ultimately evolved into "Echoes". [6] DSOTM - Early UK and MFSL beat reissues. PRO USE also good if you like high end but expensive. Reissues are EQd too high. AHM - UK wins hands down. The reissue has pretty much no advantage and the UK has better bass and vibrancy. The cover art is a play on words; if you look at it from a distance, you can see it's a close-up of an ear, with the surface of water superimposed over it. Hence, "waves of sound." These things come up in Floyd covers quite a bit, if only you take a minute to study it. Part of Floyd's massive success with Dark Side of the Moon was their tendency to sample sounds that - as incongruent as they might have been at first listen - somehow perfectly accompanied the music they made. We get a taste of that on Fearless as the Liverpool FC iconic supporter chant "You'll Never Walk Alone" features at a couple of points during the song, including the outro. YNWA may be something of a cliche 45 years later, (and I write as most certainly not a fan of that particular football club!) but Floyd obviously saw something in it before it became almost annoyingly ubiquitous. This was some years before the Kop would be watching their heroes clean up trophies both domestically and abroad. Once again, Waters and co were well ahead of their time. A short concert tour ran from October to November 1971 to promote the album in the United States and Canada, which was the most extensive tour the group had done to that point. The tour was booked by Allen Frey, who continued to organise North American tours for the group throughout the 1970s. the mfsl sounds more like clear cd and a bit colder next to the really nice and warm 1u press. even the cover print is kind of blurry and looks like a bootleg print next to the beautiful textured original 1u cover with the phosphorescent blue colour.
