And after this - after ALL THIS - she ends up having sexy thoughts and explorations with the 'tall, handsome' alien master who has violated her in so many ways since she got here. Because she "loves" him. Because he's "different than the rest of them." Excuse me while I go vomit in the corner. This doesn't happen 'til very near the end of the novel, but I could see it coming a mile away and the dread was building and solidifying in me with every conversation they had with one another. Being in this syndicate will toughen you up, but don't let it turn you to stone. Don't get too big for your boots. And always question what you're told. Remember what it's like to be an outsider, a nobody. Don't look down on the people who end up at the bottom. Give a bit of coin to thew gutterlings. Stay humble. And keep your mind open. You might find it repays you one day." PLEASE STOP TORMENTING WRITERS OR AGITATING THEM FOR HAVING A LIFE AND INTERESTS OUTSIDE OF PLEASING YOU. You are not going to drown, Paige Mahoney. You are a dreamwalker, and you know how to go without breath.”

I had to focus on not crying. No matter what happened tonight, I could not, would not cry. I'd be damned if I would cry. Their romance is forced and stretched. It is a prison-guard/mentor type of a relationship, only...not, because clearly, certainly the author is setting us up for romance somewhere along the way. The "like,", the love, the gradual building up of the relationship never felt realistic, it never felt natural; when it finally came, it just left me utterly cold and disbelieving. Because I may haven't been clear enough about the secondary characters : every one of them could have died without arousing any emotion in me. Hjelmgaard, Kim (19 August 2013). "Is Samantha Shannon the next J.K. Rowling?". USA Today . Retrieved 21 August 2013. Paige is recovering from the torture she went through while she was kidnapped—and she has a lot of PTSD to get past—but let me tell you Warden looking after her was adorable!🥺had "fresh ideas, excellent original concepts and, best of all, an impressive new voice for fantasy literature." [16] NPR also noted the same comparison, but remarked that it was more similar to The Hunger Games than the Potter series. [7] The Telegraph's review also mentioned that the book was similar to The Hunger Games and commented that the plot would be familiar to fantasy readers but that Shannon "shows real skill in combining them so easily into an original and enjoyably escapist fictional world." [17] Series [ edit ] The story suffers from an uneven pacing. Some parts drag so badly and then others are so rushed that we struggle to understand what is going on?!

Writing about trauma and phobias in any form is difficult to get right and with care. The aquaphobia that a character has developed because of trauma experienced in the previous book is not glossed over within the first few chapters as if it did not exist or was easily overcame, which is unrealistic. Shannon put this character into mundane situations where that aquaphobia does realistically affect them. Like drinking water, trying to take a shower, or having a bath. Reading these parts were sometimes difficult because my heart was breaking for them and how they were struggling. The romance tries so hard to be a slow burn. Too bad it isn't. More like nothing happens, there's not an ounce of chemistry, and suddenly they can't take their hands off each others.Going into this novella I was pretty curious to see what this was gonna add to the world that we are presented and how it was gonna add to the story and move it. In retrospective, I should have paid a lot more attention to the fact that this is, in fact, a prequel to The Bone Season and, therefore, it was not gonna move the story forward in any way.
