About this deal

Keep in mind my observations are based on the default signature, which can be customized in the Sony Headphones Connect app by adjusting the different frequency levels or by selecting one of many presets. However, I’m pretty confident you’ll love what you hear without touching the app. Though the Sony WH-100XM4 have a slew of new components inside the headphones themselves, there’s not a major difference between them and their predecessors in terms of aesthetics. In fact, put them next to each other and you’d have a hard time telling the 1000XM3 apart from the 1000XM4. c) the Qualifying Product must not involve one or more Exclusions, see below at end of these Terms for Exclusions. Exclusions may be updated from time to time.

Lastly, the one feature many of us foresaw: multipoint technology. The WH-1000XM4 lets you connect to two devices at the same time. Most headphones with this feature make you manually pair to the second device, but these cans do it automatically for you. Not only do you get voice notifications confirming you’re connected to the two devices, but you can also see what those devices are in the app. I’m loving it so far. Sony WH-1000XM4 review: Battery lifeThe power button triggers pairing mode when held for several seconds from off. Photograph: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian If you loved what came out of the WH-1000xM3, then its successor will also leave you satisfied. Both models sound nearly identical, something else I’m completely fine with since the end result is a loud and dynamic soundstage that feeds your ears with plenty of boom and detail. The Bose 700 is also on the warm side of the audio spectrum, though it pales in comparison to the WH-1000XM4.

The WH-1000XM4 doesn’t have 10 levels of noise cancellation like the Bose 700, but it has 20 levels of ambient sound to hear your surroundings more clearly without taking off the headphones. Considering the feature is still going through a refinement phase, at least on headphones, that is quite a feat. I managed to identify most of the noises around me, be it the dishwasher’s timer or my fiancée shouting a favor request from another room. Adjusting the levels will amplify noise, which was irritating whenever someone made a smoothie in a blender, but that just shows how powerful the feature is. Sony WH-1000XM4 review: Audio quality If Sony approves the customer’s price match request the below terms apply. If Sony does not approve the customer’s price match request the customer will be informed of this. Terms that apply where price match is approved:Battery life remains fairly generous by today's standards, with a full charge lasting up to 30 hours with both Bluetooth and noise-cancelling enabled. This rises to 38 hours if you sacrifice the noise-cancelling. Charging the headphones with an AC adapter will give you five hours of battery life from just a ten-minute burst of power.

Putting the bass to the test by jumping over to Bjork’s Army of Me, you can hear the can’s masterful management of bass frequencies, with the arpeggiated bass line walking through the song as the machine-like snare snaps through. Sony’s using the same 40mm drivers in the WH-1000XM4 as it had in the WH-1000XM3, so tonally and in terms of mix, there’s not much to separate the WH-1000XM4 from the WH-1000XM3 headphones that preceded them. It’s a warm and balanced sound that does well to offer a wide soundstage when required and detail that can pierce through a powerful bass performance. Regarded as one of the best in the business, Sony’s noise cancellation system keeps you isolated from noise and in touch with your music. Whether you’re working in a busy office, traveling or just enjoying music in a public space, these Sony noise cancelling headphones provide the best in long-term noise isolation – meaning you hear more of your music and less of the outside world. Customers may need to update their Sony | Headphones Connect app for this software to be activated.

But with the WH-1000XM4, you’re getting a much greater sense of noise cancellation in the mid-ranges – those sorts of areas where you get a low-level humming kind of sound that you could attribute to a fan, or air conditioning unit, or engine noise. It’s never fully silenced, but it’s remarkably quiet, and as soon as you have actual audio playing through the cans, you can’t hear the outside world at all. Ultimately, Sony's new cans improve on near perfection, and are among the best headphones you can buy right now. Call quality is average. Note that unlike most rivals, the WF-1000XM4 are often available at a discount on their RRP, so it’s worth shopping around. The headphones are generally repairable ( iFixit teardown), and replacement parts, including the earpads, headband and mainboard are available. Sony did not comment on the use of recycled materials and does not publish environmental impact reports for headphones. It publishes annual sustainability reports and its roadmap to have zero environmental impact by 2050. Observations Since their release in August 2020, the Sony WH-1000XM4 have been given a few updates. For starters, Sony released a limited edition white colorway with a gold finish. The company also releases a firmware update to improve Bluetooth stability when the headphones are paired to multiple devices and to fix a bug which saw users struggle to connect the Sony WH-1000XM4 to Windows computers.

The Sony WH-1000XM4 were announced on August 6, 2020 and while they come from Sony's flagship line, they are no longer Sony’s top-tier go to proposition simply because they've now got a younger XM5 sibling. These over-ear cans sit above the mid-range Sony WH-CH710N and true wireless Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds. One criticism of the WH-1000XM3 was the inability to connect to more than one device simultaneously. This has been rectified for the WH-1000XM4 thanks to their new ‘Multipoint’ feature which was enabled in a firmware update released shortly after their launch. You're now able to switch between two Bluetooth-connected devices. The 30 hours should be enough to get you through multiple international flights or a few days to the office, but it’s also good to know that the headphones can be charged in a matter of minutes thanks to fast-charging. According to Sony, you can get about five hours of charge from 10 minutes of power and a full charge after about three hours. While the Sony WH-1000XM4 didn’t get a boost in battery life compared to their predecessors, you're getting a substantial 30 hours with noise cancelling turned on and around 38 hours with noise cancelling turned off. I sported these headphones for 3 hours daily during my three-day weekend with no problems. The headband rested gently on my skull and had very low clamp force. When setting the extenders at the proper length, the headphones remained stable, though going a level or two higher created some looseness when head-nodding to jams. The plush cushioning on the earpads was as soothing as resting your head on a soft pillow, and the wider cutouts allow for more ventilation to prevent moisture buildup during long listening sessions.
