If you like stories set in Ireland, reading a bit of the historical fiction interspersed about the Irish War for Independence and a bit of ghost appearances to boot - you will love this book. This is the third book I have read by Santa Montefiore and I can flat out state it won't be the last. I very much enjoyed The Beekeeper's Daughter as well as Secrets of the Lighthouse. Makes you think about things in a different light..If you look at the Facebook posts about Santa Montefiore's books, it is usually the ladies who read them. But sporadically, a male reader also appears. Like myself.

Als je de facebookposts over Santa Montefiore haar boeken bekijkt zijn het meestal de dames die ze lezen. Maar sporadisch duikt er ook wel eens een mannelijke lezer op. Zoals mezelf.

Synopsis

The story starts with Kitty Deverill and Bridie Doyle as 9 year old girls. Kitty lives a privileged life in the castle and Bridie is the daughter of one of the cooks. This doesn't stop them from forming a deep friendship and feeling like they are sisters. Two different worlds these girls inhabit but Kitty is as Irish as any Doyle or O'Leary. Kitty's mother Maude is English and so the family is called Anglo Irish - this sets them apart during the Irish uprising. There is enough action, a bit of romance and lovely descriptions of West Cork, Ireland to get lost in. She can't accept that he has gone from her life forever, and so when she finds a poem called 'Wait for Me' hidden in an old book, she believes it's a sign from her husband. Max’s life in the 1980s was also interesting although I’m not sure I was quite as invested in his story and the reasons for his restlessness. Maybe I’m not a believer in what this book purports to be about although I could see it would be a comforting idea for those who have lost people.

The Girl in the Castle takes place in Ireland in the early 20th century. It starts just before the Irish bid for independence and covers the war and its aftermath. The Deverill family is English and Irish and the baby of the family Kitty, is pretty much ignored by her mother. She has a governess but for a lot of her day she runs loose. Kitty has become good friends with Bridie, the daughter of the castle’s cook. She also finds a lot of love from her grandmother; she shares something else with her as well. They both have the ability to see the ghosts of the castle and talk to them. This bothers her mother and the look in her eyes makes other uncomfortable. A promise that he will return to her. Santa Montefiore haar nieuwste roman ‘Wacht op mij’ heeft een spiritueel kantje – geïnspireerd door waargebeurde verhalen dat ze met behulp van haar eigen verbeelding en prachtig schrijftalent laat samenvloeien tot een volmaakt geheel. Deze intieme roman is daar het bewijs van. Het verhaal is intens mooi geschreven, het boek staat vol mooie woorden en passages. Eenmaal je begint in het verhaal zit je er meteen ook in en laat je het niet meer los. Je ervaart verdrietige momenten maar ook blijdschap en liefde zo puur als het maar kan zijn, spirituele scenes alsook oorlogstaferelen, alles afwisselend in 2 verhaallijnen gebracht die uiteindelijk samenvloeien op een heel bijzondere manier. Montefiore heeft verschillende thema's subtiel gecombineerd zodat ze doorheen het verhaal een uitstekende blijvend balans vormen. Of je nu gelooft in reïncarnatie of niet is niet aan de orde. Wat telt is dat Santa Montefiore volledig terug is voor degenen die dachten dat ze na haar Flappy verhaal van de Devon-serie niets meer op papier kon zetten. Integendeel, ze vertelt in haar dankwoord dat ze zo gedreven was dat ze het boek 4 maanden eerder dan gewoonlijk klaar had. En wat voor een verhaal, ik vind het geweldig geslaagd en hem intens genoten. Ik werd misschien wel stiekem verliefd op de mannelijke personages. Want wat zijn ze charmant, geduldig en zorgzaam. Ze tonen werkelijk hun liefde. Ik kan begrijpen waarom Florence het zo moeilijk had om haar Rupert los te laten. Florence is net zoals Rupert uitstekend uitgewerkt - je sluit haar zo in je hart en ervaart haar liefde en voelt haar verdriet. Maar ook Max is top en wat is het jammer dat Elizabeth hem niet in zijn waarde kon laten en niet zag hoe bijzonder hij is. Hoe het verder met hem afloopt is iets dat je zelf moet lezen in ‘Wacht op mij’. Dit boek is het eerste deel van een familie saga en het smaakt naar meer. Je moet gewoon weten hoe het er in het tweede deel aan toe zal gaan want een happy end heeft deze roman zeker niet. Ondergetekende hoeft niet op haar honger te blijven zitten want deel 2 ligt klaar om te lezen. Heel benieuwd hoe het verder gaat met Kitty Deverill en aanverwanten.

I've read most of Santa Montefiore's books and really enjoy her blend of historical fiction with modern themes.
