About this deal

Pressure sensor– Applying too much pressure can do more damage than good. Brushing hard is not the answer as bristles of the brush head should skim the tooth surfaces. Thus the built-in pressure sensor that includes a visible red light is a great way of understanding if you are applying too much pressure. Particularly useful if you have not had one before and do not know how much pressure to apply. Now you may be thinking that many other brushes from Oral-B or other brands comes with such. Which is fair, but where the 8000 comes into its own needs a little more explanation. With regards to the Genius 8000 specifically; it has an extensive box contents which adds to the overall size of the box and the total weight. Some of these items are potentially not necessary.

A break in the plastic body makes way for a tall, essentially rounded rectangle shaped panel. Within this is a similarly shaped yet smaller rubber pannel in the upper third that has the power button and cleaning mode button. The reality is, you could use any mode on the brush to clean your tongue just ending the clean sooner. Although the speed and number of oscillations will be different. The battery is built-in and is not user replaceable unless you want to invalidate your warranty and are confident with electronics and soldering. You too get a visible pressure sensor, but this now lights up not only red to alert you when you brush too hard, but green too, to show you are using just the right amount of pressure. Dr. Gemma Wheeler has looked in detail at the environmental impact of electric toothbrushes. Our guide to eco-friendly dental health offers advice on steps you can take to reduce your own impact.

The Oral-B Genius 8000 toothbrush features a Lithium Ion battery and smart travel case that’s designed to charge both your toothbrush and smartphone using only one outlet, all while delivering long-lasting, consistently powerful cleaning action for up to 12 days between charges. I am confident that the Genius X motor is more powerful. I think the Pro 5000 you might have has something in the region of 8,800 oscillations and either 20,000 or 40,000 pulsations. All these modes, with the exception of Pro Clean are standard cleaning modes found on previous/other Oral-B models, although not all models have every mode. The Pro 6000 and 6500 is the only other one to date to offer all of these. A smaller and final difference between the two models is the colour of the brush handles, or more precisely the rubber grip that runs down the front of it.Given that this icon only lights up when the mode is selected, it is hard to tell, but the Genius 9000 does offer a Tongue Cleaning mode that the Smart 6 does not.

Travel case– A very handy addition and something we should see more of. Protects the brush and avoids accidental activation in transit. The Genius range of brushes offer Bluetooth connectivity, this is something that has been available from 2014 on select Oral-B brushes, but it has been improved with Genius to take things to the next level. Below this are icons for the different cleaning modes (well 4 of the 5 available anyway) which is silver or technically platinum in colour which contrasts well with the white that forms the rest of the brush. If you’re not bothered with the whole idea of apps and smart toothbrushes, then the iO Series 3 is amazing value and, arguably, the best brush in Oral-B’s whole range. It boasts the same magnetic drive technology as the other brushes in Oral-B’s flagship iO-Series range, but comes without the advanced sensors and Bluetooth connectivity to monitor your brushing and send the data to your smartphone. In practice, that means a quieter brush with a more comfortable vibration, and one that still leaves your incisors feeling polished and your molars super-clean, as well as doing a fantastic job of clearing plaque from between your teeth. It offers a blend of features and functions that benefit us as users at a price that most will find affordable. The new magnetic driven motor is quieter and the way it works produces a cleaning sensation that is similar, but different. As you move up the Oral-B range, the brushes become more expensive, but they do come with additional features and accessories. We regard these as “nice-to-have” rather than essential. The advanced Position Detection technology of the Genius 8000 electric toothbrushes allows you to SEE where you’re brushing so you can ADJUST your technique and never miss a zone, all while having the confidence to KNOW that you’re getting a superior clean vs. a regular manual brush. The built-in 2-minute timer helps you brush just the right amount, with a timer for each zone of your mouth.
