About this deal

once applied, carefully look over the surface for any blemishes or brush marks and gently wipe these off using your clean cotton rag. Our Wood Stain is highly concentrated and effectively colours wood in one simple application. The formulation is water based and so is safe to use in all environments, as it has a very low odour and is non-toxic. It is available in 9 different colours and are available in small tester pots so you can test the colour before fully restoring the wood to make sure you are happy with it. For larger outdoor projects, you may also be interested in our Shed & Fence Stain. Our Wood Stain can be used to restore or change the colour of all types of interior and exterior wood. It can be used to stain old wood, as well as brand new wood and is easy and simple to use.

Use some 180 grit sandpaper to rub the object down, making sure that you remove any and all of the “gloss” effect that the varnish itself produces. This is also known as “deglossing”. New Wood needs to be sanded first to create a lovely smooth finish. This process will help even out the surface creating a lovely smooth finish for the stain to absorb into.

Wood Stains are a type of paint used to colour wood; a pigment is dissolved into water or solvent and applied to the wood. This is the basis behind traditional types of wood stain that will penetrate deep into wood. You will also find products designed for staining wood where the pigment has been added to a finishing agent such as an oil or varnish. However, these will just ‘tint’ the surface of the wood and so will wear off with use and will need to be re-applied. Types of Wood Stain

Apply it using the manufacturers instructions and once it’s fully cured, sand it flat, making sure any and all edges are feathered out nicely. 2. Sealing Timber Prior to Staining Timber surface that’s been stained using wood stain Has the Timber Been Stained or has it Been Dyed? You can also use a decent paint and varnish stripper such as the Eco Solutions Paint and Varnish Stripper we ourselves regularly use. However, a wood dye is designed to soak into the surface making it a huge amount tougher to remove. In terms of what varnish to use, one point to be aware of is that not all types of varnish are compatible with all types of stain, dye or sealer. If the existing wood stain has soaked too far into the timber your working with, you may have to have a rethink about the route you want to take. If the existing dye that was used was fairly low quality it may not have soaked into the timber that much so it may be possible to sand most of the colouring out. Apply the Wood Stain with a Foam Brush or lint-free cloth (You can also use a regular bristle brush). Wait for it to soak into the wood and then simply wipe off any excess with a clean cloth. The longer you leave the stain to soak in before wiping any excess, the darker the colour will be. Multiple coats can also be applied to achieve a darker colour. How to stain wood - Finishing Used Wood - If the wood is old, it may be painted or varnished. If so, remove any old coatings using a Paint & Varnish Remover first. These coatings will prevent the Wood Stain from soaking into the wood. If the wood has been treated with an oil or wax, wipe the surface down with thinners or mineral spirit to remove this. After removing the old finish, sand smooth with #100 Fine Sanding Pad. To get around this you can apply what’s known as a pre-stain sealer or sanding sealer. This effectively helps to seal the surface and any open grains to give you a much more even finish.
