Even the picture looked better, but the instructions were clear and correct and gave me all that I needed to really light it up right. Construction of the building began on March 17, 1930, and just one year and 45 days later, on May 1, 1931, it was opened for business. At 21” (55cm) high, this Empire State Building model is the tallest LEGO Architecture model to date (July 2019).

It perfectly captures the explosion in enthusiasm for the Architecture Series, and the shift from focusing on the high-level form of the building to capturing more and more of the details. The very clever SNOT techniques used to clad the facade of the model with 1×2 grille tiles make the building process very interesting (albeit a bit tedious). This 360°-displayable model features 4 highly detailed facades, a silver-coloured antenna tower and a tiled baseplate depicting Fifth Avenue and the surrounding roads, complete with 6 yellow cabs. The included booklet contains information about the designer, architecture and history of the structure, as well as historical facts about the Empire State Building and its architectural heritage. I'd tried another lighting set on my Empire State Building and never got it to work so I was unsure of trying another. I’ve always found that [this scale] tends to offer a great balance of complex building techniques as well as an exciting amount of detail. I wish Lego would design more buildings emphasising more artistry in architectural styles — like your book did. The set includes great details from the famous New York skyscraper such as four leveled facades, the building's symmetrical curtain wall design, and famous antenna tower. If I was shown this set box seventeen years ago when I was designing my own model, I would have dismissed the notion as an outright impossibility. She built it all by herself which is quite an accomplishment for an 8 year old (especially given all the complex SNOT techniques that this set uses).
