Rowling's second book in the series, the game offers a magical multitude of new challenges and mysteries as the famous "Boy Who Lived. Some scenes do not look quite right – the scale of the characters against the width of the Hogwarts Express clearly do not tally. The game can best be described as a puzzle platformer loosely based on the film version of the first Harry Potter book.

Hermione and Ron are both playable characters, and the three friends will need to work together if they're to overcome the deadly obstacles that stand in their way. In this version of the game, Harry uses Flipendo on the mountain troll and it falls in a hole in the girls' bathroom. As you progress through the game (and the story), you learn new spells and find hidden items like Bertie Botts beans and wizard cards. There's some Quidditch and broomstick flying involved, but the controls for this were rubbish and made these parts a bit of a chore to play. When a mountain troll infiltrates Hogwarts, Harry and Ron notice Professor Severus Snape behaving suspiciously before they go to rescue Hermione from the troll.In the book and movie, Ron used the Levitation Charm on the troll's club to bash the troll's head with it. Flipendo knocks enemies back, and can stun and kill weaker enemies, Alohomora unlocks certain types of locked doors and chests, Avifors transfigures things into birds, and there are even more spells to learn in the later parts of the game.

The Game Boy Advance version, along with the Game Boy Color and PlayStation versions, was designed with input from Harry Potter author J. Unique to this Harry Potter game, all characters have their own unique quotes for whenever they get hit by a spell.The visual presentation was cited as a strength, [18] with reviewers praising the smooth animation, [2] [11] lush and colourful backgrounds, [1] [11] [15] cutscene illustrations, [17] and stylized likenesses of the characters to their film counterparts.
