I read manuals before using a product, but I was slightly confused by the multi or stereo recording functionality - however, following the instructions fixed this immediately.
AA batteries will let you record for 10 hours continuously, and you can use an optional AD-17 AC adapter to record for as long as you want. The design of the XYH-5 mic capsule allows the H5 to handle up to 140 dB SPL — equivalent to the sound of a jet aircraft from less than 200 feet away! The front facing panel of the H8 has most of the main switching and controllers including six rotary input gain controllers, each with associated PAD switch and active indicator. Likewise, if you want to do a lot of recordings and interviews on-the-go, then the H5 is rivalled only by its big brother, the Zoom H6.Using it as a stereo or multitrack USB audio interface is equally interesting: In this way, the H5 can be used in conjunction with a suitable DAW for post-production or for creating sound and music productions. The playlists are different for Spotify, Tidal and Youtube, and based on the songs I enjoy and are available on each! There’s also a separate headphone output, and you can use both outputs at the same time to route audio to your DSLR while monitoring with headphones. I think that compared to NTG, I prefer the overall recording quality of Zoom H5 alone with the XY module, but that won’t work if your room is echoey.
The quality of the built-in preamps for microphones is excellent, you can easily record two mics at once, and I like having independent gains for each. Four recording modes are offered - Stereo, for general purpose recording using built-in microphones or external inputs; 'Stamina', for extended battery life; four-channel, for simultaneous recording of two stereo signals from built-in microphones and external inputs and 'MTR' (multi-track), which enables simultaneous two-track recording and four-track playback. Record in stereo from the X/Y mic capsule or input jacks, or use Multi File mode to simultaneously record the X/Y mic and two external sources (great for getting the room sound and a stereo feed from a mixer). If your XLR-1/4" input source is so loud that you need even less gain than the preamps provide at the "0" setting, use the menu system to activate the -20 dB pad (selectable per input). Get this if you will mainly use external mics, the preamp quality is worth the upgrade from H4 ,and it's very affordable.
Even the Panasonic GH5 is worlds below the performance of Zoom H5 when it comes to anything audio, so you can vastly improve the quality of your video if using something like Zoom H5. Track buttons and LED indicators for ‘L’, ‘R’, 1 and 2 channels are positioned above the main transport section which includes stop, play/pause, back, forward, and record.
