About this deal

Blackfire captures The Dark Knight and by using a method of brainwashing, convinces The Caped Crusader that he is truly Gotham’s savoir.

But then when he’s writing Batman, it’s almost as if some of the scenes are written to be reminiscent of Batman 66. You can still explore serious ideas and concepts within that formula, but dragging out the narrative to make a story feel big or important is just unnecessary. It’s because here, there’s so much conflict going on, both internally and externally, and it all plays into each other.

I’m really not all that familiar with him, but I thought he was very likable and well utilized in the story, but I can’t say he felt all that distinct. That said, I have endless respect for artists who can draw so many panels per page, even if many were just talking heads. It’s easy to forgive some simplistic talking head pages when there are multiple moments of striking beauty. Blackfire somehow manages to not only subdue Batman but also the Gotham Police Force, the National Guard, the United States Army - all through brainwashed homeless people!

There is a sense of humour, but it unfolds around Batman – as if the character himself must be taken seriously at all times. His gritty, noir-ish take on Batman was what fans wanted at the time and with this story, he would once again deliver. Here, for example, we get to meet the Miagani tribe – the Native Americans who inhabited the region before the European settlers. Deacon Blackfire, along wit his band of homeless followers, brainwash Batman by using drugs and starvation techniques. He takes over a television station and announces that he will be taking over the current government of Gotham, because it is the only way to ensure that criminal elements do not seize control of Gotham.
