About this deal

A heart-warming story of friendship and kindness brought to magical life by Briony May Smith’s enchanting characters and breath taking coastal landscapes. I’ve been on a quest to check out books from the library that appeal to my inner child and this absolutely does. At one point Margaret says something about picking a sprig of heather, holding out her palm, and letting the unicorn eat it off her hand. Each picture is so detailed and lovely to look at, with so much to see and such cute images of the unicorn and Margaret. Margaret, lonely and in need of a friend, brings him home and cares for him through the fall and winter.

This is probably the best picture book I've read all year, and the strongest unicorn book I've ever read. One day while out exploring near her home, Margaret sees something in the sky that looks like clouds, but then realises it must be unicorns in the sky. She has also illustrated numerous picture books in the UK, including Little Bear's Spring , T he Giant's Necklace , and Grab That Rabbit! A perfect gift for the unicorn lovers in your life, this lovely and utterly transporting picture book tells the story of what every little girl wishes would happen to her: a girl finds and takes care of a lost baby unicorn. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. She also both wrote and illustrated Imelda and the Goblin King , which the Wall Street Journal described as "enchantingly illustrated. I bought this as a gift for my niece, but I was so disappointed by the story that I don't even think it's worth being gifted. The story is very touching and would be great for a child who is adjusting to a new environment/situation, struggling to make friends, or simply loves unicorns / stories with a touch of magic. I love that we follow Margaret and her rescue unicorn throughout the year, so we get to see them in a variety of seasons: splashing in the waves, nestled in a cozy bush of autumn leaves, baking holiday dinner, building a snow-unicorn (yes, there’s a snow-unicorn!

I also didn't appreciate the implications of losing the magic in your life as you grow up or make new friends. I love what happens in the story with Margaret’s grandma telling her all about how she used to spot unicorns when she was a girl and what the unicorns eat and drink. The illustrations are beautiful, a book about unicorns makes you fear the worst, lilac, pale pink, sparkly stuff, none of that to be seen here thankfully, lovely scenes of Scottish rural life. Kui see raamat oleks mu lapsepõlve ükssarvikufaasis ilmunud, oleks see kindlasti sütitanud veelgi suuremaid unistusi.I think this gives the story greater power, highlighting the fact that the animals we love do not really "belong" to us, but rather, are friends who are in our care for a time. AND a car built for driving on the right-hand side of the street in the Scotland and the UK where they drive on the left (Bing on CBeebies is the same way - drives me round the bend). Margaret’s Unicorn’ is a bigger than A4 in size and is filled with thick matt pages of some lovely illustrations and text.

I also greatly appreciated the fact that Margaret didn't get to "keep" the unicorn - that he is depicted as a wild and free magical being, one that might need help from time to time, but that must be allowed to rejoin his kind. This is a definite must-read for unicorn lovers, as well as those looking for stories about magic, friendship, and adapting to a new home. Margaret and the unicorn are there for one another when they both feel alone and friendless, but they both grow through the year and new relationships await. She is the author-illustrator of Imelda and the Goblin King, and the illustrator of The Giant's Necklace, written by Michael Morpurgo and Tooth Fairy in Training written by Michelle Robinson.

The illustrations really make this such a magical book for me and I’m sure many children and adults will love looking at each of the pictures and taking in all the different things you can see! After they're gone, Margaret finds a baby unicorn tangled in the weeds and she brings it home to winter with her in the old stone cottage. They vanish as quickly as they’d appeared, but accidentally leave behind a baby, tangled in the weeds. Another page shows and tells you, that you can tell it is spring because the gorse bushes have just started to flower. I don’t expect this to be a five star for everyone – like I said, it just happened to be a kindred spirit read for me and one of my favorite books I’ve read this year!
