About this deal

Coral: A little mermaid who lost her oldest sister to Red Tide, a condition that mirrors depression. The basic subject of the novel is popular and widespread: "castaway children assuming adult responsibilities without adult supervision", and The Coral Island is considered the classic example of such a book.

If you know anyone who has depression, if YOU have depression, or even if you don’t, you need to read this book. When his father announces that he is planning to send his sister, Amaya, to a residential treatment program, Merrick disagrees. I could comment on aspects I didn’t like (Merrick and Nikki’s heavy make-out scene and his comments), how some characters changed in a blink of an eye, or that I’m still confused by the timeline of this story. While I sympathized with her feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, it could get depressing after a while.

Also, I feel like the author is doing a poor job of representing mental illness and psychiatric hospitals in a realistic and healthy way. The first several chapters made my head hurt and I wondered once or twice if the read was worth the literal headache. As a reader, you can tell all the perspectives are related somehow, as the storylines begin to run parallel, but you don't know exactly how. The second half of the novel is more action-packed, featuring conflicts with pirates, fighting between the native Polynesians, and the conversion efforts of Christian missionaries. Coral Empire reveals photographers, artists, and scientific explorers as they rendered the undersea modern yet colonial.

This book is his memoir of a wonderful life exploring coral reefs that began, surprisingly, in the wilds of Scotland and took shape once he began his undergraduate studies in 1980. While I think the author handled these issues really well, I just wanted to make sure you were aware of that! While the book deals with serious diseases having huge consequences for various marine organisms, it also reveals the way in which marine biologists can be immersed in their work yet love every minute and find ways to marvel at the mystery that is life on this planet. Leidy is the great-great-grandson of the newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer and the grandson of fashion designer Lilly Pulitzer Rousseau. A Comprehensive Phylogenetic Analysis of the Scleractinia (Cnidaria, Anthozoa) Based on Mitochondrial CO1 Sequence Data.I think she could have set it up a little better and given a few more clues as it was confusing, but it certainly turned the story on its head and gave it more depth. And they weren't detailed-ly described like secular YA either so it is better than normal, but still. The writing is strong and I know for the right person, read at the right time, this book could mean so, so much.
