I love that there are main stream books available for children that teach them about folklore from other cultures. Each of the Lower Elementary classrooms did September projects based on Baek’s magical picture book. I can say this as a sweeping remark, in my experience they offer a different perspective anywhere from the sense of humor to subject matter to the illustrations.

This retelling of the Korean folktale of the Legend of the Moon Rabbit is the perfect book to read on a sweltering summer evening. It has a soft, dark look that makes it seem like something creepy is around the corner, but with the lights in the right places, it highlights the feeling of togetherness. Inspired by Korean folklore, this bedtime story uses cutout ink characters within detailed dioramas to depict a magical summer night. It was especially fun to note how many kids said they would enjoy spending a day with Granny, the main character.These aliens just show up after a night of the apartment complex having a moon pop (the melted moon frozen into popsicles) party.

This story shows the compassion of a stranger to her neighbors and her creativity while trying to solve the problem of her neighbors struggling with the extreme heat. Not particularly persuasive, but this might coax a few young porkers to get their trotters into the tub.

But when 2 rabbits arrive because they lost their home, Granny needs to figure out how to help them. She is an internationally acclaimed Korean children’s book author and illustrator and has won the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.

An intriguing premise in which the moon phases occur by melting, and then fertilizing a new plant that releases a tiny grain of new moon. She was born in Seoul, South Korea and studied education technology at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, and animation at the California Institute of the Arts in Santa Clarita, California.

The summer heat is oppressive—“too hot to do anything”—and the sense of claustrophobia and sweat is palpable.
