About this deal

But Ewing bumps that up to text, with not only literal chapter and verse but characters themselves talking about it. You could argue there’s one, complete, complex narrative, which would make it a rare contender to be an actual “graphic novel”. I gather that Bennett has since been dropped down the cancel hole, blacklisted and reduced to working on the Rippaverse, which in its own way is like an EC plot twist-cum-punchline; I can just picture the Crypt-Keeper cackling “Hee-hee, poor old Joe loved making horror comics, until he found himself living inside one”. It’s hard to put my finger on it, just none of it really captivates me or feels fully of consequence.

Registered office address: Unit 34 Vulcan House Business Centre, Vulcan Road, Leicester, Leicestershire, LE5 3EF. This reminds me a lot of the New 52 Swamp Thing and Animal Man, particularly the faux-Lovecraftian hell dimension stuff, which isn’t a good thing. It’s a restaging of one of my absolute favourite bits of the Bible, the famous exchange between Job and the raging storm that is Yahweh. This comic is dark, disturbing in places but enthralling and is obviously building to something which I look forward to reading in the later volumes. Bennett’s gnarly monster design is essential to the book’s body horror, with each issue he drew offering up at least one gruesome double-page spectacle – sadly, often spoiled in the omnibus by gutter-loss.I mean, part of the core appeal of the story is the universal idea of losing control, of letting go of something buried deep inside that's vicious and uncivilized and powerful. This comic contains many of the things that made me fall in love with long form super hero stories such as the swamp thing run, rot world. My issue with this collection by itself, rather than the series, was that they forgot, or way more likely, omitted an eight or ten page story drawn by Kevin Nowlan.

It builds with excellent pacing and it shows the darker side of the world, the creepy moonlit crack houses and mountainside caves.Unfortunately, those first five issues were deceptively good, because the story never reached those same highs in the following 10 issues. This might have been intended as an inner-space antidote to the usual Cosmic Marvel, except Al Ewing tries to have his cake and eat it. Sure, the fact that God doesn’t explain himself to Hulk echoes the final confrontation between Job and Jehovah, where Jehovah declares that he doesn’t have to explain jackshit to Job about why his life has turned to shit. If you grew up on the 70s TV series then you’ll recognise much of the angst and loneliness that “being” Hulk means.

Why was the One-Below-All trying to escape hell through manipulating and/or possessing Banner’s dad and the Leader. This was my first Hulk comic experience, and there were many aspects of it that I could tell were meant for longtime fans. Al Ewing's Immortal Hulk takes those horror underpinnings that have been there from the start and cranks them up to 11. Definitely recommended if you are a Hulk fan or want to know the character in a way more complex way than "The green dude that says Hulk smash".It’s a bit shit that you can charge umpty-ump dollars for a comic and still ruin some of the images). Al Ewing isn’t responsible for those who follow him of course, and bless him for making Hulk’s ludicrously contrived history just about understandable to outsiders like me, but this whole system seems quite bonkers. don't worry, big guy, there's antibiotics for that now) you can’t help thinking hmm maybe this comic isn’t deep and meaningful, maybe it’s actually just kitsch? The Immortal Hulk, on the other hand, has no explanation; God has just been a dick to Hulk for 50 issues.
