About this deal

But this stranger’s motives might not be as pure as Brian first thinks, and this new relationship puts a strain on Brian’s friendships. I highlighted so much of Tyler's speech as rage inducing frequently, so the author here did a great job of executing the trust fund "bro" character well. Tyler has a plan, and weirdly his self-help exercises are actually helping Brian from accidentally marking guys who ghosted him as monthly victims… but are Tyler’s motivations more insidious that Brian first thought? The book's inclusion of popular TV shows and literature was a delightful addition that allowed us to explore and experience the references for ourselves.

I did expect the ending to be less uplifting yet ridiculous and maybe more satirical or dark, but to be honest, I think the ending does suit the book generally (and seems to set up for a potential sequel). I wanted to give up after the first chapter but I pushed myself, wanting to give it a fair shot, I’m 44% in and I just can’t! But seeing the description of this book being of a gay man in a dead end job trying to work out where he'd going in life. Brian works at a restaurant, spends his time drinking with his coworkers Nik and Darby or having Grindr hookups, and doesn't deal well with his monthly transitions into a wolf. His work colleagues Nik and Darby try to look after him but obviously he can’t tell them what is going on so when he meets Tyler, another werewolf who completely has a handle on the werewolf side of life, he is glad to have found another like him.

I have to say although I’m not keen on fantasy as a genre, I do love everything to do with vampires, werewolves witches etc, probably due to my life long love of Buffy the Vampire Slayer! As a reader who enjoys a healthy dose of werewolf lore, I found that there was actually not much exploration of this aspect of the story. Corvus Atlantic’s commercial fiction list which includes women’s, historical, romance, sci-fi, crime and thriller. He doesn’t really have a plan of how to live his life as a werewolf, drinking heavily and often waking up in a forest with blood on his face and he knows he has killed at least a couple of people. Brian, an aimless slacker in his twenties, works double shifts at his waiter job, never cleans his apartment and gets black-out drunk with his restaurant comrades, Nik and Darby.

Seriously though, I don’t read a lot of books that don’t have romance, so it’s always refreshing to find one, especially with a queer MC. Admittedly, I like to think I hold life to a higher standard than Brian's fairly flippant "oopsie-daisies", but than again, I'm not a werewolf. While the werewolf storyline took a backseat to navigating identity and complex relationships, it brought humor and carried significant queer themes. The messages and themes of masculinity, queerness and wellness culture explored in the book are not exactly subtle or overly clever but are still important and interesting. Tyler, a Millennial were-mentor, takes notice of Brian's unique condition and offers him an opportunity to join forces in taking on the mythological world.
