About this deal

When I'm not working, I'm usually making 3D models of characters, creating Harry Potter fan art, baking (and eating) and making ‘To Do’ lists. They are wonderfully Gothic yet light-hearted, perfectly capturing the essence of the story and characters. She also illustrated the relaunch of Enid Blyton’s The Famous Five series, and Cornelia Funke's Dragon Rider series.

Amelia loathes the Ball, but at least this year she'll have someone of her own age to keep her company. The Amelia Fang series was Laura's first fiction series as author and illustrator, featuring a young vampire and her friends. Then the King's spoiled son Tangine captures Squashy, Amelia and her friends must escape the party to plan a daring rescue! The characters are such a delight in this, Amelia is so fun to follow and I love her friendship with Florence and Grimaldi. What I appreciate about Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Ball was the eventual acceptance shown towards, in this case, Creatures of Light, even though they are talked about as terrifying creatures throughout the book. I'm not going to lie, I've bought the whole of this series without having even read the blurb purely based on the beautiful cover and sprayed edges, and the fact that I love Laura Ellen Anderson's illustrations. Throughout the whole book he is seen solving crossword puzzles instead of helping his wife with preparations for an event that is clearly important to her or helping his daughter in a complicated situation she finds herself in.

Laura is the creator of EVIL EMPEROR PENGUIN and illustrator of WITCH WARS, as well as many other children’s books. The perfect mix of funny, foul and fearful’ Metro ‘Brilliantly imagined … laugh-out-loud funny’ Sunday Express. There’s also the theme of bullying in this and standing up for your friends, so it’s a beautiful message wrapped up in a spooky tale. This gloriously ghostly new series from the creator of EVIL EMPEROR PENGUIN is perfect for 7-9 year olds and fans of THE WORST WITCH and WITCH WARS. The first in a series, this ghoulishly funny chapter book is full of fabulous gothic pen-and-ink illustrations and explores the importance of friendship.

Prince Tagine’s attendance at Amelia’s family’s annual Barbaric Ball means she will not be the only child. All this considered I couldn't give Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Ball a very high rating, which makes me incredibly sad since this book had such potential. Furthermore might this have something to do with his father’s absent behaviour and mother’s disappearance. In his opinion, his social status gives him the right to torment everyone around him, his main target being Amelia. A brand new title in the bestselling gorgeously gothic and wickedly funny Amelia Fang series – perfect for readers of 7+.

Of course Amelia's friend wanted to beat Tangine to death before accepting him but let's not talk about that. A truly wonderful story about making friends and finding out who people really are, it is full of escapades and fun that kids will enjoy reading time and time again and is aimed at the 5 to 8 years market with manageable chapters for the beginning chapter book reader to get their teeth sunk into ;) This book is such a great read that I feel that older children will also love it as well as many parents who will enjoy reading this book either aloud to, or along with, their kids. The front of the book has a double page map of Nocturnia, the City in the Kingdom of the Dark, complete with Nocturnia Palace, the Fang Mansion, Rickety Residences, Catacome Academy and various creepy looking places.
