About this deal

Many studies and surveys have shown a minimum of 40% and others have shown that up to 75% of all high school graduates are not prepared for college or work. As a result, most elementary school teachers have a stronger background in educational theory than do law professors. There was a lot to digest so it was quite a slow and considered read, but it was full of helpful insight. At the same time, reading Letters to a Law Student will help anyone who is considering studying law at university decide whether doing a law degree is the right option for them.

But you must couch your arguments, even the most precedent-shattering, in the least revolutionary way. Voted in the top 6 books that future law students should read, it is an approachable and easy-to-follow guidebook. Many modern teachers have fallen away from the rigid, Kingsfieldian[8] approach to the Socratic method, on the grounds that learning cannot take place in an atmosphere of abject fear. If you cannot live by the rules now, when you are being scrutinized at every turn, what will prevent similar conduct when no one is watching? Of course, there are some judges (I could name a few …) who are determined to give effect to their own convictions, come what may – but there exist procedures for marginalising them: their judgments can be overturned on appeal, and they tend not to get promoted to the higher courts where they can have more influence on the direction of the conversation among law-makers as to what sort of society we should live in. The smart students adapt to this culture in the way that a canny anthropologist can “become” Yucatecan or Balinese. But it has, regretfully, all but disappeared from undergraduate education, in part because it is so labor-intensive.

What we want you to understand is that you cannot win application of the rule if you do not identify facts that satisfy all its elements. The only negatives or feedback for the book that I have would be that the author was from the United Kingdom and therefore, there were many pieces of valuable information that I would have liked to learn if only it was related to the United States; however, I don’t think that it would be fair of me to say that the author was in the wrong for doing this since he was from the United Kingdom. The text flows as a series of letters between a lecturer and aspiring student, divided into chronological parts from thinking about a law degree to preparing to study law, studying law, writing like a lawyer, and thinking about the future. I would strongly recommend this book to current students, as it raises issues which are not dealt with in other texts and has many sterling qualities. Anyway, failure is a necessary part of the learning process for lawyers; losing is a regular part of professional life.

The ultimate power to decide what sort of society we should live in rests with the legislators: in deciding cases, the judges must give effect to any relevant legislative provisions that have been validly laid down by the legislators. They will be mediocre lawyers, but participants in the ritual nonetheless, because the system will attribute the appropriate meaning to their gesture even if they do not themselves comprehend its full import. Although this book is little under 400 pages, it is a slow and careful read due to all the critical information you get through every page (I advise you to highlight/take notes in the book). What is interesting is the analysis, where you debate the applicability of the rule, and its meaning, in specific cases.

You are not primarily here to learn the substance of the law for future use; you are learning the skills of analysis and self-instruction for future use. The rule in that case is that the courts won’t enforce contracts that are antithetical to “public policy.Eventually, this will give you insight into the thinking of your clients, your adversaries, the judge and jury. Many studies, articles, and polls have proven that law school students are at high risk for depression and other mental issues. Fearful of the stress, challenges, and unknown of where you want to go, what you want to study, and anxious about the new experience?
