About this deal

The lark is an appropriate symbol for this book, for this is the lark ascending, which can be realised only through separation. In many ways this makes sense – much academic ink has been spilt on the issues associated with conjuring up an imagined reader , especially in relation to children’s literature. The Independent said of it "Einstein's Underpants is zany, irreverent and downright absurd - children will love it.

In fact, it’s not until almost the end of the book that the lark actually makes an appearance – and not in the same very real and concrete way that the animals in the earlier books appear. Dogs of the Deadlands is the story of some of those dogs, and their struggle for survival in this beautiful, but dangerous, new world.

For me as an adult, the prospect of a life in which I am the sole carer of my sibling is much more real, and so thw anxiety about what would happen if I wasn’t there is correspondinly more real.

This author has a style all of his own, but if you are a fan of simply written, short books - Tom Palmer's, for example, you will like this. It is good to learn that the first three books are now available in a single 380 page volume from Barrington Stoke, The Truth of Things. In addition to his 2020 win, he has been twice longlisted (for The Knife That Killed Me in 2008 and Brock in 2014) and once shortlisted (for Rook in 2018) for the CILIP Carnegie Medal, and is the winner of the 2006 Booktrust Teenage Prize for Henry Tumour. As with the earlier books, along with the excitement of the adventure, our interest lies in the relationship between the brothers and the emotional frontiers they cross, together and separately.Ross Welford introduces Time Travelling with a Tortoise, the sequel to Time Travelling with a Hamster, and a whole new time travel adventure! A simple walk on the moors, which begins in a light hearted way soon becomes a deadly dangerous adventure as a blizzard descends and the brothers lose their way.

Dad’s happily settled with nice Jenny, who sorted out the family’s domestic chaos of the earlier stories. The epilogue of the book skips forward some decades, portraying the brothers as older adults who have lived out full and largely happy lives. But writing for Barrington Stoke made me focus on the bare bones of what makes us want to read: on character (above all), on the story, on the setting. There were a few miscellaneous things I had originally had in mind for that post, but couldn’t fit in.

It kept my son interested (he loved all the sweary bits) and the story was interesting and definitely thrilling. Just when things couldn’t possibly get worse they do and you don’t know if they will make it home again.Great for Reluctant Readers – Teens and Young Adults / ISBN 9781781128435 Purchase this product now and earn 32 Points!
