The majority of the whisky destined for blending is matured in ex-bourbon American Oak casks, with the relatively small proportion of whisky destined to be bottled as a single malt being matured in ex-sherry European Oak casks, giving a very different character to the whisky. Established in 1798 in the picturesque town of Pitlochry, the Blair Athol Distillery is one of the oldest working distilleries in Scotland. The introduction of the new licensing laws was followed by a revival of its fortunes in the hands of John Robertson.
