This week we reviewed the Dali Spektor 1, Dali Spektor 2, Dali Spektor 6 and Dali Spektor Vokal speakers. A quadruple test to evaluate the capacities of the new Dali Spektor range as part of both a hi-fi and a home cinema configuration. Again, the Spektors are a rear-ported design with quality five way binding posts, and they can be used with the grilles on or off. The wood fibre 4.5 inch midwoofer is quite striking to see when the grilles are off. The soft dome tweeter is also quite stylish with the grills off and the fit and finish is very good as they benefit from DALI’s exclusive (owned and operated) Chinese manufacturing facility in Ningbo. The Spektor 1 tweeter is able to render high frequencies with high accuracy. This means very short excursions, but at high speed, - or rather with high acceleration. In other words, it features a low moving mass and a strong motor. Dali Spektor 1 speakers are entry level in everything but sound, an ultra-compact bookshelf speaker built around a 4½ wood fibre woofer and a 21 mm soft dome tweeter. They are perfect for almost any situation that requires a very small but high performance speaker, either in a compact two channel system or as the front, rear or side speakers in a home cinema system.

The Q Acoustics M20 HD Wireless are also plainer looking, like the Dali, though some extra curves that you might appreciate. The tweeter also stands out, thanks to its ultra-lightweight weaved fabric material which weighs less than half the industry standard. If you were to touch it, you’d barely know it was there, though we wouldn’t recommend it, for fear of damaging its delicate structure. Optimising the audio signal for off-axis distribution results in the signal reaching your ear directly and the signal reflected off the room surfaces, to have a coherent balance. This means a consistent high sound quality across a much wider listening area. At the same time, it offers greater freedom and flexibility in positioning the loudspeakers. For purposes of this review I will treat the two speaker systems as if they were in a head to head battle between speakers offered by two rival companies. For purposes of this review a compact DALI subwoofer (C8D) was utilized, this is a downfiring 8-inch unit. But it’s beyond the reach of this review to comment on it, except to say that it fulfilled the task at hand admirably. The blending or integration of a subwoofer with the monitors is a topic of serious concern, but that topic is also beyond the range of this review. Perhaps I will write something on subwoofer integration at a later date. In the vast majority of cases we will not be able to install the cabinet doors to built-in laundry products as the fittings very rarely match up. We will try our best however if we are unable to do this we will still install connect to plumbing and put the appliance in situ. An added benefit is hugely reduced harmonic distortion and diffractions causing frequency distortion, as these will always be stronger in an on-axis response. This is also the reason why all Dali speakers are not designed for toeing-in. Wood Fibre ConesOn the surface these may look like a posh pair of Spektor 2s, and there are certainly some strong visual similarities. But start listening to the Oberon 1s at the end of a suitably talented system and you’ll find they’re capable of sonic feats the junior speakers only hint at. But aside from the limitations of size, they produce a quality of sound only the very best at this level can get close to. You may especially have a hard time using Tube amplifiers which are traditionally very low power compared to Class A/B or Class D speakers. Dobře vyvážený zvuk je tak i mimo osu reproduktorů.
