About this deal
There are credible details of court procedures and social workers though, and enough ‘realism’ to make me go along with the situation. The warning bells were huge in this novel, often leading me to question if the events in the novel could have been turned in a completely different direction, by the selection of a different foster family for our lead. Allegory and symbolisms abound with frequent, sly, and carefully orchestrated references to ‘Lord of the Flies’ and ‘Peter Pan’, which I will leave for you to draw your own conclusions. We learn how Annie’s mother abused and murdered young children in her ‘playground’, a hidden area of their house.
Many were saying that this book was going to be one of the more controversial novels released in 2017. Milly wishes she could tell Morgan the truth about her past and what happened to her, but it’s too risky. I tend to take these predictions now and publicity hype with a pinch of salt as really it can't be predicted. Since I tend to like books with twisted and disturbing characters and stories, this one worked for me!As her mothers trial looms, with Milly as the star witness, Milly starts to wonder how much of her is nature, how much of her is nurture, and whether she is doomed to turn out like her mother after all. The narration tends to flow steadily, thoughts, both good and bad pop in and out of this teenager’s brain.
When Annie informs the police of this at the tender age of only 15 you can gasp and feel her emotions. It’s easy to say that teachers, and by the same token counsellors and social workers, can sometimes be the worst people at seeing what’s going on in their own lives, despite being able to spot the signs in the classroom or consulting room, but I struggled at times to accept that this was where Annie/Milly had ended up and that Mike is so blind to what’s going on, although obviously it made her situation and the story all the more compelling and involved as a result. How likely is the child of psychopath likely to have similar tendencies, whether through genes or upbringing? I felt a lot of sympathy for her not only with her upbringing but also with the school bullies and the fact that she felt that she was so alone.Good Me, Bad Me by Ali Land is a disturbing, chilling, and a suspenseful psychological thriller novel with an intriguing and unsettling storyline that is a slightly different take on the life of a serial killer because she is a female. Good Me Bad Me reveals its shocking secrets slowly while reeling in the reader with all the intricate skill of a spider spinning a web. I lead me to question who authorised this placement and was there such a lack of potential foster carers available to Milly that she had no choice but to stay with this awful family! But I guess the point was- to the outside they look like they're thriving when I'm actual fact it's a load of rubbish and they are just as messed up as the patients he sees. Milly’s new foster parents, the Newmonts, are specially chosen to give Milly the best possible support.
Sleep continues to evade her as her mother invades her dreams turning them into nightmares, and even during waking hours she senses her presence all around her.Ali Land graduated from university with a degree in Mental Health and spent a decade working as a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Nurse. The book begins with this very appropriate quote by Cason McCullers: “But the hearts of small children are delicate organs.
